As it is I'm booked in to get my first shot on Wednesday and I'll be glad of it. Incidentally I actually took my first test on Friday night when I was up seeing a friend. For how easy it is (admittedly it did bring tears to the eyes when you poke the stick far enough up your snoz), I really can't see why parents are complaining that their kids are having to take them. It really isn't a hardship, and most of the games we used to play as kids ended up hurting a lot more! Of course for today's soft kids that just play playstation and sit on TikTok all day that may be a slightly different matter... |

Picking up on that, the problems we face these days, in general, are a media that is now conditioned to presenting partisan sensationalism and a social “media” that amplifies extreme (often contradictory) views and presents them to you via algorithms…. This has an effect on the perception of folk and (thereby) an impact on the choices they make… so we see many more extreme views and the extreme difficulty faced now if one wanted to control a message in a balanced and measured way…

Just watching The Anti-Vax Conspiracy on Channel 4. Absolutely gobsmacked at the stupidity. And Piers Corbyn is completely deluded.
It also shows how Andrew Wakefield committed fraud and was struck off by the General Medical Council for his involvement in the autism/MMR scandal. Absolutely criminal. Last edited by DougMcL; 06-01-2021 at 03:17 PM.. |

If I may I'd like to pick the brains of our resident virus expert 😊
Having been completely starved of live music for so long, I absolutely jumped at the chance recently when I heard Download Festival was going to be running a government sanctioned, 10,000 capacity pilot festival on the weekend of 18th June. I've been every year for the last pretty much 20 years, so to say I was excited would be an understatement! I had my first jab on 2nd April (Astrazeneca) and was due to have my second on the 18th June which obviously is no longer possible. I've rebooked it for this weekend, which would be just over 9 weeks since my first dose and two weeks before the festival starts. I'm assuming there's no issue with that 9 weeks in terms of effectiveness? I could have left it closer to the original date, but my thought process was get it in early to make sure it's at a higher level of effectivenes by the time the festival rolls round. I know everyone is required to present a negative lateral flow test to get entry, but hey, I'd rather have all the protection I can get! Do you think having it this weekend would be best, or am I likely to get more benefit from leaving it until closer to the event? Or am I just massively over thinking this now lol. |

Have it two weeks before. That is more likely to give you benefit... I don't think the interval of nine weeks vs twelve weeks is going to make much difference.

9 vs 12 weeks should not matter. There are boosters for other vaccines that are at 3 week intervals and some at a year or more. Immunologically your first encounter with the virus or vaccine primes your immune response and the second or subsequent encounters or vaccination boosts the response. You have a good response after one shot usually, and the boost; well it does exactly what it's name implies. It also for those that, for what ever reason, don't generate a strong response with one shot, this second shot helps better prime that response (maybe a turbo boost in this case (slipping in car lingo here to fit the forum )). You definitely want at least two weeks before you test your immune response. It takes a week or more (probably closer to two weeks) to really ramp up the response. |

Well I had my Pfizer jab yesterday and was fine most of the day, felt a bit tired in the evening so went to bed at half nine (usually closer to half eleven) with a bit of a sore arm around where the jab was given, like how it would feel if you'd done a bit too much at the gym and then back to normal today. Totally fine, and definitely not a problem. I'd take those side effects every day of the week over the alternative.

50% of the adult population have had both jabs now so we are making good progress still.
Hopefully the plans for June don't get put back.....

Just had the 2nd jab this morning....felt rough by the evening after the first one so hoping the 2nd is milder side affects.....although in any case I’m just happy to hopefully be protected (fully In a couple of weeks of course), as much as you can be and also hopefully protecting others too....!!!

I had my second dose today as well all done now, people need to get the vaccine when asked and stop with the pseudo science objections.
If it's good enough for the Queen and US President it's good enough for the tin foil hat brigade...

Second jab appointment was scheduled for the 17th but popped down to the local drop-in clinic this morning and got it straight away. No side effects the first time, so hopefully same again.

Same here, second AZ jab just under two weeks ago for me. Side effects were less than for the first dose but similar, headache and some sore muscles over the following day. A couple of paracetamol every four hours solved the headache.

Definitely get that second shot. That delta variant looks to be pretty dangerous. It seems more infectious and more deadly. From a virology side, the virus seems to be very fit. With lots of real world data showing that most hospitalizations and deaths are in the unvaccinated, this second shot becomes really important. I think the new numbers are showing that less than 1% of the severe infections are in those fully vaccinated. So get that vaccine and stay away from the delta variant.

I've been keeping a low profile all year and will do until a couple of weeks post second jab.
CajunBMW how much further do you think these variants can mutate and how much "worse" do you think they can become?
