I think I'm in the minority, I don't like how the 4-series looks.

BMW, give us a 2 door 3 series.

The 4 series IS the 2 door 3 series... if you haven't caught on yet.

3 - 2 = 4

This is obvious.

I understand that from a marketing prescriptive, but the 4 series is wider, has a lower center of gravity and bulkier than the 3 series... if you look at previous generation 3-series cars, the 2 door and the 4 door versions were more similar... that's how i see it.

I love marketing mathematics.

Reality is BMW saw what Audi was doing with their A4 coupe, which is make it look different and call it an A5 and saw it was selling like crazy, so BMW figured it'd do the same thing.

Fun fact, every car Audi makes that rivals BMW has a number that is one digit higher than the BMW equivalent:

3 Series = A4
5 Series = A6
7 Series = A8

Upcoming 2 Series = A3

This was also done on purpose.

I'm sorry but I either see 3-series GT in this or Pontiac Grand Prix. Looks bloated.

This is hilarious, and spot on:

"BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe, the sedan version of the coupe version of a sedan."

Didn't the E92 also sit lower, a little wider than the E90? Not sure I agree with "bulkier"

From Wikipedia about the E92 vs E90:

"The coupé's body is its own design and no longer derived from the saloon with two less doors like its predecessors. Almost every exterior design cue is different from the saloon counterpart."

Nothing different in the approach to the 3/4 except for the marketing move to make it a 4.

It's a hatchback 3 Series. I won't pay $5k more for a marketing trick.

very good observation, I really never looked at it this way but it makes sense.... this also means that we are getting a 2 series GC

A traditional (looks wise) two door version of the current 3 series will look much different than the 4 series... if the 4 series is the two door version of the 3 series then what is the 4 series GC doing? and what if BMW decides to give you a two door 3 series?

I think the 4 series is intended to be a different car/line.

Yeah, the nearly $25k spread between the 5 and 6gc buys more differentiation.

my guess is $2500 tops over a 4 series, under $5k over a similar 3 series.

I'm pretty sure it's not a hatchback. Just a more coupe-like profile with a regular trunk.

I was at the dealership this week and I was in the sales room scoping out what BMW has on offer. This is probably the umpteenth time I have looked at the 4 series and I come to the same conclusion every time. It looks HUGE. Yes it's about the same size as the F30 but whatever optical illusion is at play just makes the car look big. The 6 series gran coupe that was there seemed to be about the same size as the 4er but as we know the 6er looks way better.

I worry that the 4 GC is going to look even bigger than the F32. It just seems wrong for the sedan to looks smaller than the coupe. They got it right with the 5er and the 6er. I don't like how this is playing out with the F30/2
