Injectors on a 2014 328d

Hey Guys
Dropped my car off today at BMW for some recall/warranty work.
1) CV joint recall
They are replacing it and need to order some parts. It was making constant ruhhh noise which doesn't change when cornering. Not a ruh ruh ruh like a wheel bearing. Thought it was transfer case until I learned about the recall online. All good there. Free cv joint

2) fiancée was driving my car the other day and got a "drivetrain malfunction" warning. Shut it off and it went away. When I scanned the car when she got home I got a code which Inthink was p019d (I think, can't remember). When I googled it, pretty sure all signs pointed to EGR valve.

So I brought it in for extended warranty on EGR. They just called and told me that I need an injector. Injector for cylinder #1. Part#135-385-065-48
Cost would be $950 for parts and labor. This seems absurd to me. I put 4 Bosio Sprint 420 nozzles in my VW TDI w ALH motor in it for like $200. Has 385k miles and still running strong after 200k miles and one cleaning.

Question is, can I change the injector myself or do I need ISTA or Esys? I don't have any software except for my VW and my old Volvo S60R. I know I can physically replace it, but do I need to code anything or set timing or anything like that?

If I do, can someone point me to somewhere I can get the software I need at a low price and fast.

2b.) Also, are there any injector upgrades yet for the 328d? Nozzles/Injectors, egr block off, 11mm fuel pump from an automatic, and a tune on the old VW TDIs and it was a completely diff car.

For stock injector replacement, I would probably get from getbmwparts.com

Haven't researched much on performance yet because I've spent my time on M conversion lately. Have F&R bumpers going in for paint on Monday! Side skirts are done.

Injector calibration code needs to be coded in, yes. Windows laptop plus ista or at least tool32 (part of BMW Standard tools) is required. That or get an ENET and ask really nicely and I can do it over the internet.

There are no *easy* upgrades for injectors.
ALH was dirt simple. This is not in any possible way at all.

This would require a rewrite of about 1/3 of the flash to calibrate the injectors in correctly and optimally. I know only one person that did it more or less correctly. There are 3-5 fuel injection events per cycle with different timing and quantities.

For what it's worth, the stock injector costs $189-200.

Thank you very much. I've been having trouble finding anything in this. Even on **************. I got a link from Shawn for esys the yesterday but did learn I can't code the injector with it. Will still use it for VO coding though. I'll search for ISTA link today and download. Have no idea where to start.

I do work in IT though, so should be able to figure the coding out myself. It's getting it installed and setup that will be the biggest challenge. I have a OBD2 to ENET cable already and a laptop with windows 10.

I may take you up on that if I struggle. Really appreciate you reply.

If you had to guess, how long of a job is it to replace and code?

The physical labor for replacing the injector is around 15-30 minutes. They simply pull out by hand. It couldn't be easier. However be very careful with the fuel return clips. Excessive force will break them.

I clean down the shaft with a rolled up shop towel to reach all the way to the bottom, blow some air through, and then grease the body of the injector when installing in.

Then "coding" in the calibration value is simply the ID on the injector top and inputting it into the DDE module. This can be as fast as opening the program and getting to the service function for it and typing data in.

ISTA itself isn't strictly necessary for it. But the nicer GUI makes it easier.

The cool thing about these injector and pump setup is that it has quite a large capacity.

I'm trying to find a link to ISTA 4.28 on another forum. Won't mention it here. I've done this stuff with VWs and my old Volvo so I'm not afraid. I just can't find a download link to latest ISTA version. Would you be able to PM a link?

I'm having a hard time telling these guys to go ahead with a $1,000 repair for something that take 45 min total.

Yeah, no need to upgrade injectors if it's that involved. I just need to replace 1 for now but sourcing the software to calibrate it in DDE is my challenge. I have the pdf for install and using ista already. I have link for 4.10 but my understanding is I need the Iatest version

You don't need the latest version, in fact, after ISTA 4.15, the program got much much slower.

I used 4.15 whenever possible. 4.09 was even faster.

For what it's worth:

Tool32 (part of BMW Standard Tools) and ENET or K+DCAN:

-Load D70BX7A0.prg with ignition on/engine off.

-Run Ident job once (in job list) to check that the DDE is connected
-Run job abgleich_ima_lesen to read the current injector codings

To Program Injector:
-Choose Job abgleich_programmieren_ima and use the following format in the argument box: [cyl 1 code];[cyl 2 code];[cyl 3 code];[cyl 4 code] All caps as it appears on injectors, in this order. Then click run job once button.

-Done. Turn off ignition for 10 seconds, then and you can recheck with the abgleich_ima_lesen if it worked.
