Unhappy Front Drivers side knocking after engine warms up

Hi all, on my f34 at 38k miles i started getting some knocking sound coming what seems like front suspension every time i press on breaks or accelerate (when car moves forward or back). If im driving on motorway nothing, as soon as i slow down and sit in traffic for a bit it starts and gets louder and louder. I mean in 10 min it gets from slight knock to loud knock feels like car falling apart or tyre about to fall off together with breaks.

I have appointment at my local mechanic on Monday, i tried to find anything in forums and seems im not the only one, but different issues suspected.

I personally feel its something next to exhaust as it happens after driving 20-30 miles. It sounds like centre tie rod, one of the ball joins on the centre tie rod which is close to exhaust and i guess it warms up so much that it doesn't absorb any vibrations hence sound of metal to metal knock.

Any help or advice much appreciated, maybe someone had similar issue and there is aftermarket replacement of more solid part.

Thanks.

Hi,

I am having a similar problem in my f30. No one is able to diagnose the correct fault and I have already spent enough money on the car finding the problem. The suspension arms have been changed. We’re you able to resolve your issue?

Thanks

Centre tie rod offside has been changed for now costing £170. I havent had a chance to go for a long drive yet but this Thursday im going for a approx 2 hrs drive so this will tell if the part changed is the culprit.

ill update you, if i dont and forget PM me to remind.

Hi,

I am still struggling with the same problem. I have replaced suspension arms with no solution. I haven’t changed the tie rods which was suggestion by my mechanic. When I took it to dealership they said it’s the steering rack and offered to fit the repair kit. I left with them for a day just for them
To tell me that my steering rack doesn’t support the famous repair kit. They want me to book it in for a diagnostic inspection before they replace the entire steering rack. If you managed to fix yours then please let me know it would be a great help. Very hard sorting this out as all the dealerships and mechanics want you to drop the car off but then the noise doesn’t come when car is cold. It only comes when in traffic with constant stopping which they will never replicate.

Thanks

Exactly as you mentioned "noise doesn’t come when car is cold. It only comes when in traffic with constant stopping which they will never replicate. "
I was coming back from heathrow and when stuck on A40 which i was happy about hoping to give enough time for faulty part to warm up and hoping noise doesn't come... no noise until i got to Camden, so nah still got the problem.

In a way i feel knocking in break pedal when even slightly breaking. Maybe something to do with breaks even tho i can feel its coming from drivers side front.

I think ill have to go for a drive then pop in to garage with sound present. Still doesn't guarantee they will locate the issue. So im sure we have the same problem, if you changed suspension then i feel i can learn from that and its not the issue.

Going to call garage again see what they say.

I have done that a few times now. I have been to the garage while the noise was present. They have driven it around and then put it up the ramp and the it all just seems guess work from that point onwards. I was really hoping you had got yours fixed. I am going to an grosvenor bmw specialists in reading on Thursday. You can PM me and I can give you my number so we can explore this a bit more. Does the knocking noise gets worse when it starts coming. I feel mine starting from brakes and then even moving on slow speed on uneven roads I can feel it. My brain keeps saying it’s the brake pads. I recently changed disks and pads to brembo and since then the car hasn’t been the same.

Thanks

Yes the noise as mentioned in first post does get louder and louder, so over period of 10 min i assume people outside can hear that sound. Starts from breaks and seems to spread in region of driver side tyre area.
