Request: Your F Series car pictures taken with a 50mm f/1.8 lens!

Hello F series folks. I am going to try my hand at photography since my car is going to get a few things installed this weekend. Since I live in Miami and want to pick up a hobby for the weekends, i figured that i should take advantage of the scenery here and use my car as the test subject.

I just picked up a Nikon D3300 with a 55-200mm lens but i also bought the “nifty 50” as they call it which is the 50mm f/1.8 lens. I’d like to see how your car pics look using this lens so i can start practicing getting similar angles. Any help is appreciated!

Edit: 12/20/2020 - Got a new front lip since my CF one came off due to a screw that was loose

Edit 11/30/2020:

Edit 11/15/2020:

Here are a few pics I took today

Hey man. I'm no pro but some words of advise. Just go shoot. Shoot every angle of the car, high and low. Learn how the lens works in different conditions with different apertures, shutter speeds, and iso. Find out what angles YOU like through your own experience. My car photography was funny back when I first began taking pictures. Many people will tell you it's not the lens or the equipment that matters. While that is true, good equipment helps a ton with nailing the shot in fast or undesirable circumstances. I'm gonna attach 4 photos to this reply. The first 2 are my shots from 2 ish years ago, the next two are my most recent shots going back a few weeks to a few months. Go out and shoot! Practice makes perfect. Come back and fill this thread with your photos for others to enjoy. Oh, and remember to have fun with it! Thats the most important one.

this is 50mm 1.8, shot at 2.8 though, which is my DOF preference for full car shots.

Very nice! I am assuming you use lightroom to make the ground darker so it brings your attention to the car? I've watched a lot of youtube vids and this is something they recommend as a typical edit. I like how you do it

For a quick 101 tutorial on using the 50mm 1.8, do this...don't use your DLSR on P or Auto. Set to "A" or Aperture Priority.

Now frame your shot. Change the F-stop to 1.8 using the dial, or whatever it is on your camera. Take the shot. Now change the F-stop to say 2.2 and take another shot. Keep on doing this until say 4.5 or so. Look at your shots and see what you like on a computer - its tough to tell on a 2" screen.

You can play around with DOF calculators online, but just practice. Digital is free, not like the olden days where you have to pay for film.

Yeah i haven’t used auto. Ive watched Youtube tutorials to learn more. I actually went to Manual instead of aperture mode so i have full control. So far so good. Today i got a tripod so this weekend I’m going to take a whole bunch of shots.

Luckily i have a very good monitor i bought when i upgraded my office earlier this year so it was night and day seeing the pic on the camera to seeing it on the computer.

Thanks for the tips

Thank you! I actually use Luminar 3 by Skylum, but I do heavily edit my photos to make the car stand out!
