Discs and Pads squealing
I've had my 330d a couple of weeks and when i picked it up the brakes were badly squealing. The seller said to take it to a garage and get it checked and they would cover it. It had new pads all round fitted recently and BMW didn't pick anything up on the vehicle health check - everything is green for brakes!
I've taken it to a BMW specialist and they said that its frequency squeal and it needs new pads and discs (currently scored and lipped) all round at a cost of : £764 for fronts £470 for rears Sounds extremely expensive and not sure where i stand with the trader i bought it off? |

Can be a difficult one, I'm assuming that other than the squeal the brakes function OK so arguably is fit for purpose
The M-Sport brakes are known to be prone to squealing, even my 2019 5-series does it occasionally and that has only 11k miles on it The dealer (I'm assuming non-BMW) might take the line that it's a second hand car so the brakes are by definition also used, and as they function OK they might decline any contribution Alternatively you could try and work with them, a set of Pagid disks and pads for the front may well cure it and might only be 250 quid in parts. Whilst I'm sure it's possible for the rear brakes to squeal I'd be inclined to try the front brakes first as most of the braking effort is at that end. Unfortunately BMW prices are usually eye wateringly expensive and on older cars probably not worth spending as generic parts from the likes of Eurocarparts are available at a fraction of the BMW price, as long as you buy a decent make (eg Pagid) you will be fine I'd try this route as the nett margin on a second hand car will likely be far less than the cost of getting the brakes done at BMW dealers. Good luck |

With regards to the dealer you bought it off, you're more than likely going to be relying on his generosity, unless there are other factors in play.
For example some dealers will say the pads need X amount of millimeter remaining and disc thickness needs to be above a certain amount before sale. It also depends on the way it was sold (in person or internet/phone). Did you question the squealing on the test drive, was you fobbed off with 'they're new pads, it'll stop once bedded in.' On BMW's report does it give the dimensions of the pad and disc thicknesses? If the discs are below the minimum tolerance they should've been replaced with the pads. With regards to price it does look expensive but it does depend on the type of brakes you have, blue Msport brakes? |

Unfortunately they do squeal at times just depending on your driving. Whether they are part worn or new they can still do it.
As an example my pads and discs are fine, no lips on the discs and plenty of meat on the pads, all original BMW. Last Friday I was having a lot of stop start in and around London, brakes started to squeal at low speed when stopping (20mph range). Got back on the A1 North few miles and good use of the brakes reducing spped on approaching roundabouts and the like, all quiet again. Needless to say every time they squeal a little firm use of the brakes and they're fine again. You get used to it. |

Squeal is very common on these brakes - do a search for some fixes....
no point replacing brakes for the sake of it, and that price is VERY expensive, I got all mine done for around 500. |

I questioned the brake noise and he heard it. He said to take the car to a local garage and get them to take a look, they would pick up any costs, but probably not £1200s worth . I'll try and get him to pick up the costs of new discs as a minimum. The garage that quoted £1200 are saying that i need composite hi carbon 2 piece. Are these oem spec? https://www.autodoc.co.uk/ate/7883611 |

Look to be. I went with M Perf replica's with grooves and dimples:
https://www.autodoc.co.uk/trw/11015794 not had a squeal since If buying from Autodoc its also worth noting its usually a few quid cheaper via the app. |

Sounds as if they will contribute but £1200 is main dealer prices. I'd double check if the parts the specialist have quoted for are Genuine BMW parts. |

Have you tried re-bedding the brakes in before embarking on a potentially unnecessary expensive and wasteful replacement of the discs and pads? I know these brakes seem to be reasonably prone to it but if it's new pads on old discs then they might just need a decent bed in if they weren't done properly before and there are deposits stuck on the rotors unevenly etc.

Common problem and I never managed to resolve it on mine. I was told by an ex BMW employee that it's down to how long the cars are sat outside prior to sale (when imported) but that didn't necessarily stack up for me even as a mechanical layman.

Mine's a funny one if anyone has any ideas... Recently had new discs and pads fitted and the only time they make a noise is when the car has been parked for a while. So when I get in and go to set off and release the handbrake you hear a squeal for about half from the NSF wheel when setting off. Also noticed over the last few days when it's been wet that the squeal hasn't happened? Apart from that they don't make any noise when driving/braking.

I had nasty squeals on my last f33 with standard brakes, always when coming to a stop last few metres, took it to one BMW dealer who said it was to be expected and not that bad.
Took it to another BMW dealer and they said it was unacceptable and repaired it under warranty, (it was 2 and a half years old.) A Standard BMW fix apparently even had a crib sheet on how to do it, involved removing pads and putting a chamfer on the leading edge. Result no more squeal, at least for the two months I had it for afterwards. Oh and I was told by one independent as well that the only way to fix it is to put new pads and discs on. |

squeal is due to the sound generated when 2 variables meeting (brake discs and brake pads). In my case I changed the cheaper variable brake pads (pagid ones,) cost me £140 installed by indi for msport ones on my 335d squeal was gone.

My blue m sport brakes (340i) squeal at low speeds sometimes too.
Agree it seems rly go away after using them "hard" for a bit, even just slowing down from high speed gently. Annoying though when it starts happening when your just crawling about. Embarrassing actually : |

As someone said chamfering the edges of the pads may indeed help but that chamfer will soon disappear as the pads wear down so not really a fix. I do suspect that as the pads move around in the calipers (the gentle clunk when applying barkes in reverse then in forward) that the surface of the pads and discs are not completely aligned all the time which may be the issue.... who knows. |

Brakes seem to have settled down a lot, only minor noise now occasionally whilst stopping.
I did notice that the disc width was 0.1mm off the minimum on the BMW report so probably due to be changed soon. |

I've just spent £530 for 4 discs, 2 sets of pads, 2 brake wear sensors. That was with a hefty discount from Autodoc (50% off discs, 40% off everything else) They were Brembo X items though, but still. Shows how much markup they put on parts and then the labour too! Probably be £1400 or more at a BMW main dealer for all that work.
