2016 328i XDrive - M Performance Steering Wheel
Hello,
I have a 2016 328i XDrive. I'd like to get the M performance steering wheel but I'm told I'll need the following parts from BMW. 32-30-2-230-188 - M Performance Steering Wheel ($665 USD) or 32-30-2-230-189 - M Performance Electronic Steering Wheel II ($1015 USD) and 32-30-8-092-724 - M Sport Airbag ($900 USD) 32-30-7-848-337 - Connecting Line ($50 USD) 32-30-7-848-333 - Screws Set ($25 USD) 32-30-7-848-268 - Rear Cover ($50 USD) 61-31-7-849-393 - Control Unit ($250 USD) 61-31-7-849-407 - M Sport Multifunctional Switches ($250 USD) Needless to say this is pretty spendy at around $2200-$2600 USD all in. The worst part is I'm in Canada so the dollar is going to make this $3000-$3500 without tax and shipping. Has anyone found a way to reduce these costs or get the whole assembly as one piece. I'm a little hesitant about going to a junkyard or ebay seller for the airbag. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

See attached. It's the non-M performance steering wheel.

The F20 M performance wheel will be a direct swap.
I did the same thing in my F30 way back when. You could also look at Royal Steering wheels, I got them to sort my wheel for my current car. They do a swap over, mine cost in total about $400 or thereabouts. http://royalsteeringwheels.com/f20f30/ |

There is a version of the M Performance steering wheel that is a direct replacement for your car.
https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-3...i-2012/?pdk=AQ It doesn't look as nice as the M Sport steering wheel, but you won't have to buy all the airbag which is a huge hassle to get and quite expensive. You only have to buy the steering wheel and all the other parts you can just reuse. Also, unless you like maintaining alcantara, I'd recommend maybe just getting the regular M Sport steering wheel in Nappa leather. Alcantara requires monthly maintenance to keep it looking clean. If you're OK with that, it does look and feel very nice. |

Good point on the Alcantara. I prefer no-hassles so I'll go with the Nappa leather. |

The problem with the airbag is that there are many versions. Long story short, you have to find the dual stage airbags with the third blue connector. There are a lot of dual stage airbags in Europe without the blue connector and that will not work on our cars without coding. Even with coding though, I wouldn't risk it. You have to buy an American airbag with the black, green, and blue connectors. So it might be best to buy an airbag separately because it is very rare to find a full American steering wheel+airbag set. Here is what it looks like: F30 M Sport Airbag - eBay The safest way to acquire the airbag is via a body shop or dealership but obviously that's the most expensive way. What a lot of people do is find it used on forums or eBay. It's up to you what you'd prefer to do. In my opinion, if you can get the VIN of the donor vehicle and look it up, then that's pretty safe. |

Maybe the best is to look for a complete wheel and buy a new US airbag. Still not going to be cheap, but cheaper at least - and safer. By the way, why are the used ones always from places like Estonia and Latvia? |

Just a note that you can also buy an M3 steering wheel which has the tricolor stitching and an open lower spoke on the trim piece. It looks a little sportier overall. It's the same fitment for everything like the airbag and the media buttons. There's also the M3 airbag which uses a nicer leather cover instead of the rubbery plastic used on the regular M Sport airbag. The regular M Sport airbag is pretty nice so for most people the extra cost isn't worth it. Again, all other parts are interchangeable. |
