Tire Shine?

Hey guys,

I know this has been heavily discussed all over Google searches and maybe here but is it true that tire shine is bad for your tires? The reason I ask is because my 2011 Audi A6 Allroad's pirelli tires barely had any of the lettering and specifications on the tire show by the time we sold it. Could this be due to the use of tire shine spray? I am asking because I just bought some Armor All Extreme Tire Shine gel; worried it might lead to the same thing on my 435i.

Thanks

I've never heard of any of this. Are you scrubbing your tires with power tools or something? You should wear out the tread way before the sidewall lettering.

Unless my arm is that strong then no haha. I know it's really really weird.

I've read the same thing about a lot of tire shine products -- if it contains certain chemicals, it is apparently able to cause damage to the rubber over time. Causing the lettering to wear away seems pretty extreme though.

I use Chemical Guys Tire and Trim Gel -- http://www.chemicalguys.com/ProductD...ode=TVD_108_16 It works great and you can use it on other parts of the car.

I'm pretty sure the one I used had all of those chemicals haha, a quick google search of my product's name yielded nothing, not even a crappy 3kb picture. Never touching that "brand" again.

I use Optimum Opti-Bond Tire Gel occasionally when the rubber starts looking dull. The shine lasts for about a week or so, and doesn't sling. It says its water-based, so haven't had issues so far...

I've been using the AA Gel for years. Never caused any harm to my tires.

Some tire dressing is solvent based and can harm your tires if applied incorrectly. It can also harm your painted wheels. I suggest buying a water based tire dressing. The reason some detailers prefer a solvent based dressing is because it tends to sling less. However newer water based dressing will not sling either if applied correctly. The trick is to really rub the dressing into the pores of the sidewall rubber and gently wipe away any excess. Do not spray the dressing directly onto the tire because it will fall into cracks and crevices and will later sling. Apply it on to the sponge and wipe it on.

Haha, stop curbing your car and the side wall lettering should outlive you! But seriously, I've used Armour All sprays and their gel for 10 years, and never had a single issue with the sidewalls deteriorating.

Yeah not sure the tire dressing could cause the raised lettering to fade away, but it's a good idea to use only water-based tire dressing for other reasons. I like Poorboy's World Bold n' Bright... water based so it doesn't build up in the rubber, easy to adjust how shiny the tires look, dries quickly and doesn't sling

Hahaha yes I know, but it still bothers to see a set of new tires be thrown away.

19 and you have a driver i want your job ... or at the very least i want to be adopted into your family

But getting back to your question (lol), you didn't say how long you had the Audi before you sold it. I'm guessing the lettering just wore down over time naturally from weather, heat, wear, etc... I can assure you no tire gel will do that to your tires.

Are you applying the gel with a belt sander? Maybe thats the issue...

Water based tire dressing are the best for your tires, but they generally don't last as long as the petroleum based products.

Even with the petroleum based products, your tires with wear out & need replaced long before the tire gel causes any deterioration of the rubber.

2 Years, 25,000 km on it, and no gel at the time, was some sort of spray. Now using Armor All Gel, looking pretty good and so far so good.
