F90 M5...

Why do I keep looking at M5’s on AT.....?!?!?

They are holding their value (most cars are I guess), with 18/19 plate low mile cars, mid to high £50k’s

I’ve wanted to scratch the M itch for years and given I already have a 540i, I’m used to the size but wondering how different it would feel compared to a 540???

Doing very few miles at the moment so running costs not an issue although I know servicing, tax, insurance etc is very expnsive, but you only live once....

Something like this has me drooling:

I just found a great car on Auto Trader:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-det...02104211643550

Talk me out of it

OK, what are you going to use it for? When you want to put your foot down and go for it, there is nothing better. But on the days when you just want to potter and relax, I found it frustrating as there is no "normal" mode. Even if it says there is, its just less racy - but still racy in my mind.

Its hard. Not firm, stiff. Despite having comfort seats I didnt ever really find mine comfortable.

Its big. You say you have a 540i so are used to the size but if you think about where you can drive an M5 fast, its not going to be the motorway, too many cameras and cars. So you are looking for country lanes but its a big car to hustle down country lanes.

It was without doubt the best engineered, fastest, most mind blowing car I will ever own. But it couldnt do the day to day stuff that I was doing 95% of the time well enough to endear it to me. The RS4 isnt as "good" but for me its "better".....

I think that one is pricey. My car was a 19 and sold for 61k (the dealer sold it for 61k) last August.

It will feel ballistic compared to your 540i 0-100 mph in 6.6 rather than 11.6 seconds you're going to notice that step up in performance, the interior will feel special compared full nappa leather M multi function seats etc...it'll be sharper to drive and more tied down.

I've had 6 M cars and 6 normal BMWs the difference is pronounced (but of course you might not like the difference or want it or drive in a manner that the extra performance will matter)

I think Wills2 says it better - its fast, and very different. Different may or may not be better for you.

what about an M550i?

F10's are holding their value well too. Tempting when you consider the cost of ownership on a used one could be pretty low (relatively) when you can sell it on with out much depreciation.

However I've realised there's just nowhere to enjoy fast cars much in the uk. Cameras, grannies doing 30 in a 60, police everywhere, 50 avg speed zones... Is there any point?

Having said all that, I too spent far too long today looking at F90's wishing they'd hurry up and go under £50k.

It will never be cheap to run. The RIS was £700 at retail, on a good day I could get 24mpg, on a bad day I would get less than 15....

Prices are firm now but my car had a 4 year / 32k GFV of £35k. That sounds about right once the market goes back to "normal"

Yeah have to admit sub £50k for low miles car in the right colour and I reckon I would be on it like a car bonnet

Thanks mate.....yeah I think I’d quite like something a bit more edgey....not too hard core but just enough for it to feel special.

Reckon I need to test drive one and see how I like it

Map the 540i. The difference is very pronounced, roughly 100hp more, huge jump in torque and 0-100mph in around 7 secs.

Still slower than an M5, but will quickly show you that 430hp in a 5 series is too fast for the UK, nevermind 600.

As Ian says, too risky using the power on the motorway, too big to hustle on the back roads.

Then you're just buying it for the badge, the interior and the noise/drama, which for some will justify the cost I suppose. I'd be looking for something smaller and more nimble if I wanted to change mine for a performance car.

Did you not buy another Audi S5 sportback? Or was that somebody else?

Totally agree, the M5 Comp is a magnificent bit of engineering but I suspect like many of these 'Super Heated' Teslas once you have done a few foot to the floor acceleration runs the novelty will soon wear off, at least it did for me when i had one on loan.

In my experience long term driver satisfaction is much better obtained with something light and nimble, ideally as a second car.

"not too hardcore"
Then M550i is probably a better choice because the M5 is as hardcore as a 5 series gets.

You only live once.
Get the F90.

I find myself doing the same. Looking AT for newish m5's it will probably be the only M car I look at when I detach myself from my much loved 440i.

I'm amazed how many of these are on autotrader. Surely there isn't the market for these to have 225 of post 2018 on sale? Gobsmacked.

Yes I did......S5 is has only been 6 months 😂. Contemplating getting rid of both th S5 and 540i which will fund the M5 and then go into some kind of hybrid company car like an A3 or similar which wouldn’t cost much....missus can drive the comp car mostly and I get an M5.....man maths at its finest 😂

Just went for a drive in a friends M5 and it is a fantastic car.....absolutely rapid!!

Didn’t sound as loud as I thought it would, but that’s probably not a bad thing!

Everything is holding its value now, according to WBAC I could pretty much get out of my RS4 and get all of my deposit back!

That M5 that you linked probably only cost £69k brand new, maybe £72k if they didnt haggle hard enough....

I dont miss mine at all, never had a moment where I thought I need more power or a bigger car in last 6 months...

Well I could have said the Mini is worth more than I paid for it 18 months ago.... but not sure that would have had the right impact

Small update on this…..still got the itch and have been looking informally for a month or so now. Not actually viewed any yet, but going to look at 2 black ones tomorrow….both similar spec with comfort pack but one has B&W sound…….think I need to get the M itch out of my system…..you only live once….!

Anyone got experience of how the B&W compares to the HK system? I
Find the HK system quite underwhelming in the G series cars…!

Yep, but maybe make sure you have a good "get out" plan. However it's likely they'll continue to hold money so you likely won't lose much by getting out of one, should you need to.

Here's a video on the subject by Stef ABTV, not someone I follow on YT but still found this video on owning an M5 in the UK interesting.

I was the same with the 440i... I *had* to scratch the itch. I'm glad I have, but the urges to look at other cars was only put off for a few weeks, now I'm back scanning autotrader like a loon most evenings. What's wrong with me?
