EV Battery swapping does seem pretty unlikely to succeed, as Better Place discovered a decade ago. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Better_Place_(company)
I'm not convinced that much has changed since then... |

Concept would appear to be right, but will it happen?
I'm minded that if something like the battery swap is going to succeed, decisions should have been made and standardised, well before now, across the whole motor industry. Nothing worse than all going their own way and then expecting standardisation later on. Simple thing like EV charging, why on earth are there several types of charger connections? Electronics have gone through wasted innovations, where there are winners and losers, due to not setting the standards early enough. Then I'm not really convinced about the alternative 'rapid' charging of EVs either. Easy to talk about something like 5 minutes for 500 miles. Even "if" the battery technology matures to allow it for the mass market, stop and think about the power requirements of a charging station servicing 50 - 100 vehicles an hour. |

As the environmental implications will be as well, the answer to the issues caused by mass consumption isn't more mass consumption with a side order of disposable 80kw battery packs...

Tesla had this working nearly 10 years ago. They even had operational swap stations in LA.
But it turner out in reality hardly anyone used them, so Tesla pulled the project. https://www.businessinsider.com/tesl...15-6?r=US&IR=T |
