Research and development of new technologies doesn't come cheap. I don't think any car companies could be accused of profiteering. It's just too competitive.

I feel more sorry for the car companies than the consumers an overall sorry state but I'm more of a consumer than a car company hence my priorities are skewed.

I can only speak from my perspective, but from that perspective then the answer is yes. Having performance available for when it's needed (overtaking) is one of modern day drivings few joys.

Although the 0-60 time is okay, I'd be more concerned by the 115mph top speed. Clearly that's way above what we can do in the UK, however my concern would be how that torque tails off above 60.

Just imagine the battery tech in 7 years time.
Battery technology now is virtually the same as in 2014. Tesla had a 85kWh back than already. The main changes in the last 7 years is costs of production has come down, but as others have pointed out not necessarily the cost of EVs as manufacturers have to recoup the cost of development/investment at somepoint.

Hyundai are selling this thing at a loss or minimal profit, look at Tesla/BMW/Merc/Audi EV pricing to see just how expensive EVs are if been sold with a margin for the manufacturer.

£45k for this thing is a bargain in EV market.

If that hasn't made me jump nothing will in the near future.

scheme closes 7/3/21 as per the link.
That used to be £36k I'm sure

Does the extra £300 grant for charging points still apply in Scotland?

Is this the first Hyundai to sell out?

I must say I love these type of retro/future design EV's than any on the ones with stupidly different blue bits on. The Peugot one a while back was gorgeous too.

Also on the Ioniq 5 the solar panel roof is a great touch. I didn't see much other detail though. Does it charge whenever it can, parked, driving etc? Last time I saw this was about 3 gens of E class ago to power some small AC functionality while parked up. They quietly withdrew it though.

I very much doubt that it would. The 115mph top speed is limited; it's not quoted because that's all it can manage.

From what I can gather it charges all the time, it can add up to 2000Km range per year in sunny climates such as Spain, in the UK it would be less so it would likely only average an extra couple of miles range per day but would be enough to maintain the battery level if the car was parked up for a long period.

Problem is the electricity the panel would generate in a year would only cost around £10-15 if you were home charging on an EV tariff, considering the cost of the panel (I assume it won't be a cheap option) it would have a long repayment time. Good idea in theory but maybe not so much in practice.

Kona EV sold out too, £40k+ for a small Hyundai having 6months+ waiting list who would have thought!

Interms of EV drivetrian efficiency Hyundai are AHEAD of Tesla, and far far ahead of VAG.

Their build quality is as you would expect from a Japanese brand, add in some design flare and they ate positioning themselves very well for the new EV world.

Of course it would. Electric motors produce maximum torque at zero rpm, ergo as it spins faster the torque reduces.

yes it was 35 or 36k interest free over 6 years and there was no cut off of 40 cost price. My friend who bought a model s took the grant in 2016.
The charging point does apply in Scotland AFAIK.

Though the ionic looks nice in pictures wonder how the final product will look like given hyundai did also produce this abomination recently.(nicest pics I could find).

Top speed in EVs is limited and not a true top speed. My Mini SE has a top speed of 93mph. Believe me it gets to that speed very quickly

I find the pictures of the Ioniq deceiving, to me it looks like a T-Roc size but the dimensions are much more like an X3, the current iX3 has a top speed of 112 so even slower and has quite a bit poorer 0-60 time. At £60K for a 2 wheel drive iX3 against £45K for the 4 wheel drive Ioniq, I know where my money would be going.

All I meant was they are as reliable as the Japanese brands, unlike most brands from Europe/US.

My old BMW was the most unreliable car I had ever owned, but the Tesla has easily beaten the BMW for that crown.

If I had sense Hyundai should be the next car we buy, but till now they have been a bit dull. The Ionqi 5 looks great though .
