Any Ideas?
Two days ago I did a pull on the highway and everything went to crap. At higher speeds, the car was shaking like crazy and at a red light, it wants to die. I didn't get any codes because I guess my tune was disabling codes and then when I retuned it to stock, it immediately threw a drivetrain malfunction code. I recently put in brand new NGK coils so it shouldn't be the plugs.
I was running stage 2 E30, I checked the intercooler piping to see if it was loose which is why it was wanting to die out, all the piping is on tight, the chargepipe is fine and the intake is fine. I don't see any leaks on the engine or below the car, but I do smell a lot of fuel on start-up. It could be because of it being catless but I haven't smelled that before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J63ynAqwd1E I tried my best to record it, it honestly sounds fine to me on video but it's very easily noticeable in person. I'm getting my OBD reader tomorrow which will hopefully tell me exactly the code thrown. I'm hoping it's not an injector since N55's are not as notorious with failed injectors but who knows. |

Even a coil, it should throw a code fast.

It did immediately when I tuned it back to stock, all it states is drivetrain malfunction on the BMW infotainment screen, I hope my OBD will give me more of a definitive answer tomorrow. The whole car shakes quite a bit, especially the motor.

Give us the codes when you have them, don't drive the car in the meantime.
Can't your tune software read the DTC codes?

This is what BM3 is showing me
https://ibb.co/n6njh97 My NGK coils are gapped to colder and have probably around 1000 miles on them, I'm hoping its just the plugs. I read up on the codes and some say that injector 6 can get stuck open due to E85, i've never heard of this happening lol it would be my luck. There goes $120 plugs as well.. I would start by resetting the codes and swapping the ignition coil from cylinder 6 to another cylinder. see if they error code follows.
you can also check the plug of cylinder #6.

First suggestion was going to be to check the plug installation but someone already beat me to it. Usually when problems come up immediately after wrenching its directly tied to the work.could be a lose coil pack too.

I appreciate the suggestions guys, I will try the plugs and coils first before I change the injector. I did already order an injector just in case along with another 6 plugs, I can easily return them if anything. I will update.. there is gasoline leaking under the car at a very small rate, would it leak underneath if its a stuck open injector or do I have bigger problems lol?
It seems to be coming from the back of the engine which would make sense with the cylinder 6 misfire. |

Remove the engine cover, and look at any wet spots around fuel lines, injectors, fuel supply hoses. If it is leaking, you should smell gas around the engine. This is very dangerous and gas fumes are toxic, work in a well ventilated area, not a tight closed garage.

I took a few more pictures while trying to figure out where the leak is coming from and what leak it even is. The only place I can see thats been leaking and leaking recently is on the steel tray on the left side right beneath the valve cover. It sure looks like oil to me but I could be wrong.

Looks like an oil leak to me, but unless something broke causing the leak + the symptoms it shouldn't be the leak causing it. Try swapping to OEM plugs, and as others said recheck the install. I'd put some UV dye into the oil too and check where the leak is. How long has the intake been on the car?

Yes every BMW leak, it is part of the ownership experience, it is only getting harder and more expensive to fix.
Gas has a very specific smell, you should be able to know if you smell gas or nothing. Oil leak doesn't smell for most human. Ok, let's forget about the oil leak for now. (is the leak on the ground picture from one day or ongoing?) Back to the original problem: swap that #6 coil and pull the plug out of cylinder#6. Show us a picture of the spark plug from cylinder #6 and let's say cylinder #1. Swap the coils, reset the codes, put plugs back, run the car if engine light back on, see if it is cylinder #1 or still cylinder#6.

Anyone seen this on a coil pack before? It's my cylinder 6 coil pack which is where the misfire is being detected.

You stated that you recently changed the coils... how recently?
Did you swap the coil to see if the code followed the coil?

I swapped the plugs recently, I'm going to get a new coil today to swap it in. I thought it was the injector and it still might be, but I didn't think the coil would look like that. I tried to look it up online and I've seen nothing like it.

Well, what people are saying is that you dont need a new coil to test if the problem is the coil. You swap the suspected bad coil with a known good coil from another cylinder and see if the problem follows the coil.

Yes I do and that is the coil from cylinder 6, correct. I'm on vacation while the parts arrive and I will replace the coil prior to even touching the injector. My concern is that I've never seen anything like that on a coil before lol.

That coil is "Toast"! Haven't seen one that bad in a long time. Possibly the gas odor is from that coil not permitting the plug to fire and therefore, it is very rich (unburned gas in the chamber, being dumped out the exhaust)
