6MT Shifting advice

I have been experimenting with different foot positions while shifting. Question: when you depress the clutch pedal, do you plant your heel on the floor mat? Or do you have your foot floating in the air? How about when releasing the pedal? Release with heel dragging on the floor mat? Heel pivoting on the floor mat to release the clutch with your foot alone? Some combination of releasing with foot and leg? What is the proper clutching method?

The clutch pedal has a lot of travel so nearly impossible to complete a full swing with your heel on the floor. If you adjust your seat properly, you should be able to fully depress the clutch with a slight bend at the knee. Your heel probably will be floating. As you release it and get to the grabbing point, you can plant your heel to get more control and slowly engage the clutch.

When shifting at speed, it's a more fluid motion so no need to plant your heel at all. Just practice the timing so it shifts smooth with minimal slip.

Personally, I use my whole leg to depress the clutch. Then plant the heel and release to catch point.

my heel is off the floor when I am clutching...how much throttle you apply is really the trick to being saaaamooooth! this can be challenging since the throttle response is noticeably different across the modes. I typically release the clutch slowly until i feel it start to engage and that's when i start feeding in just a bit of throttle. I keep the process relatively gradual when im not racing.

There is a clutch delay valve in the manual F3x that prevents engaging the clutch too quickly. I don't like this because it affects the "feel" and timing of when the clutch engages.

I installed the ultimate clutch pedal and lots of spacers on the clutch stop. To give an idea: clutch needs to be pressed firmly to start the car. I am very happy with the clutch travel, probably down to half the needed travel from stock.

Next is to remove the clutch pedal spring. Pedal feels too artificially springy.

With the current set up I can engage the clutch with heel planted which gives some control but 1st to 2nd is still hit and miss.

+1 on the clutch stop upgrade. Totally changed the clutch dynamic while shifting by eliminating the dead space in the clutch travel.

In terms of the footwork. There’s no wrong way to do it. Find a way that’s comfortable and effective for you.
