With the JB4 + MHD back end flash, I think fuel-it was able to get a solid E50 blend with their Pure Stage 2 440i.

I ordered it to use on a stock turbo with an E85 blend. Waiting to find a tuner and the parts and I'll post impressions when installed.

Thanks for the suggestion. I snagged a cheap AIC1 controller and was going to do tune only but might pick up the JB4 from a user here. I think the safety features of JB4 are pretty nice and I won't have to tune the AIC1 controller.

I am a couple of weeks out from receiving and installing everything.

I reached out to MHD and Protuning Freaks because I'm trying to decide on a BEF and looking at the Fuel-it CPI as well. I was pretty disappointed with the MHD response. Here's my question to them, after I explained my current platform, which includes a JB4:

By adding the MHD BEF, I can start running an ethanol blend which will allow me to increase my target boost at a safe AFR, right?
Would adding the MHD BEF as a standalone mod to my existing platform provide very much benefit, or should I add it at the same time as a fueling solution, such as a chargepipe injection kit?

Their response:
"first of all we do not provide JB4 BEF map, they are provided by Burger Tuning so best would be to ask them for a recommendation.
We prefer flash only tuning but the fuel system limit from the B58 is still there, so don't expect that you can run a high ethanol content on high boost.

We would recommend to get a WMI injection"

Like, WTF does this even mean? They "prefer flash only tuning"?

Response from Protuning wasn't a lot better:
"Based on your setup, we don't recommend running JB4 along with BM3 unless you are running meth and using the JB4 to control it. Have you tried our E30 map? I think you might be happy with that."

I'm a little frustrated trying to understand how these supporting mods from the vendors should be used together. Just when I think I understand it, I get something contradictory.

I just emailed Fuel-It to get an update on the status of my order since they were out of the office until September 16. I will install my kit as soon as I get it and will provide my inputs on the installation and recommendations.

Fuel-It says the CPI kit can allow us to run full E85 (if needed) on the stock turbo. As someone else mentioned, I believe E50/E60 is the limit on the pure stg 2. Probably will need another injector at that point to run full E85 (again if needed).

I have a JB4 for sale since I decided to stick with BM3 and use the AIC1 since thats what F80Paul recommended. He will be tuning my car. If you are interested in the JB4 let me know and ill DM you.

Lol if you saw my first post above, I sent an email to Fuel-It about the status of my order. They responded back and said it should be hopefully shipped out this week.

Thanks for the offer but I just bought it with bluetooth and an FSB meth controller from another member here. I am still not sure which setup to go with. I will probably start with the JB4+BEF and hold on to the AIC1 controller and see how your setup performs compared to mine. From what I am reading each one has pros and cons

Fuel-it CPI + JB4/BEF + FSB Controller
  • Safety features of JB4 switching to a different map if necessary
  • Better logging and easier map switching
  • Able to use a baseline map provided by PTF/Fuel-It
  • Easier to just turn off the injector and switch to a pump gas map for winter
  • Will probably be cheaper to get some custom tuning from Terry especially when considering different fuel types than buying a custom tune for each type of fuel on BM3.
  • Since I am thinking of bigger turbo next year this will probably be cheaper than having to buy 3+ new maps on BM3.
  • CON: I will probably make less power than a custom BM3 tune.

Fuel-it CPI + BM3 custom tune + AIC1 controller
  • Less upfront cost to get all the hardware. I guess this is subjective based on what you already have.
  • Custom tuning will surely get more power out of the car.
  • CON: Need to tune the AIC1 separately and access it every time to flash.
  • CON: For me personally, logging is harder than JB4 with bluetooth since I don't have an OBD agent.
  • CON: Harder to flash on the fly since I don't have an OBD agent and 4g access is bad in the small town I am in.
  • CON: Don't have the safety features of JB4.
  • CON: Custom tuning is pretty expensive.

I am leaning towards the JB4 right now. The question really comes down to money. Install scheduled for the 27th. We will see how it all pans out.

Nice.
When is the install? Looking forward to impressions. Mine should come in next week.

Hey, I probably won't install it until next weekend. I need to do my 10k maintenance and I would rather take my car as is to the dealership before putting on the CPI kit.

I will, however, take pictures tomorrow and update this thread so everyone can see what comes with the kit.

Please do, I been debating on switching from meth just to make things more simple since i already run the JB4 + FSB.

Sorry that you got upset with the responses?

1. MHD is correct in that they do not provide BEF. You will need to reach out to Terry at BMS for those or pay for a custom tune.
2. "Like, WTF does this even mean? They "prefer flash only tuning"?"
It's exactly what it means. Flash-only tuning. JB4 is a piggyback tune. MHD, BM3, MG, Mission Performance... those are all flash-only tunes. Piggybacks lie to the DME/ECU.
3. I'm not seeing any contradiction. Go with a flash-tune platform, either MHD or BM3. Ask Terry (if going with MHD) for a base map, or pay for a custom tune. Make sure you have something to control the CPI (JB4 or AIC1 controller). Log, retune, repeat, until you and/or your tuner is satisfied.

To be fair, your question is kind of confusing. What is your goal? You have a JB4 and want a flash tune to supplement it? Or you want a custom tune to run E85?

Most people on here will recommend flash only as will other tuners. Terry does his own MHD maps as a BEF, and he offers it for free to JB4 users. It's not related to MHD specifically, it's kind of like Terry is the equivalent of a "custom tuner" on BM3.

There are a lot of ways to make good power safely so you have to be specific with your end goal. For example, adding E85 typically means you want to add timing to make more power, not boost. So your first question probably won't resonate with the tuners.
