I had a passenger ride in an E92 335D

and oh my word, for those of you in the new F30, it must be like driving a rocket ship. This version, on a 57 reg still lit up the traction control light on a straight road in dry conditions in 2nd gear at 40mph.

The way it surges and pulls is unreal.

I MUST have a 335d at some point in the future.

For now I'll try and enjoy my 320d but for now the shine has been well and truly taken away.

It's all relative really, my brother who drives a Kia something or other had almost the same reaction at the acceleration of my.. 320d

As someone who is within 3 weeks of his 335d I am very pleased to read this!

Coming from a reasonably pokey 123d I wasn't expecting my socks to be blown off, but whenever I read a post like yours, I think again.

Thanks

Don't let let it take too much shine off your 320d - I drive a 328i and owned a 330d for 3 years - both of which are pretty rocketshippy - and when I get a chance to drive a new 320d or 520d, I'm always blown away by that engine in terms of performance and economy!

It's just the way it delivers the power that's different to a 4 cylinder. It seems to dig deep and give you a lovely shove with seemingly little effort. No doubt the 123d was a nippy vehicle but I'm sure you're in for a massive treat with what you have on order!

They sound good too!

True - I've just enjoyed a little spirited drive in it just now and it is very impressive. It just lacks that bit of top end speed above xxmph!

The only F30 I’ve driven to date was a 320d and I was very surprised how rapid it seemed, especially off the mark. For 0-30mph it on par with my E90 330d but after that my 330d picks up. Its great for driving around town (ie low speeds) and would be as quick as bigger engine car – but on the motorway and A road I feel it would lack a bit compared to the bigger engines.

Very true. It seems to whip through first and second very quickly. Surely the ratios of the 8sp box help massively.

The 320d makes massive sense but, that power is totally addictive in the larger displacement models.

I went from a 2003 Volvo V40 1.9d estate with 115bhp to an F30 335d just over two weeks ago and it still feels like a rocket ship to me!

I've never had the pleasure of riding an E series 335d
My brother has a 600hp skyline and my dad has an Alpina roadster s, both were seriously impressed by mine, even keeping below 4k revs. The crisp paddle shift is an absolute delight to blat through

Hmm, look at at that lovely slippery rain, bye....

Yes. This is a known problem with the rwd big capacity diesels.

Hence the reason why BMW probably went for xdrive only on the f3x 335d, most likely.
I think it may well be to make the car more attractive to more people. Yes, we all like rear wheel drive only on here - but not everyone wants that amount of power and torque through the rear wheels only.

I have had my E92 335d for over 4 years now and it still puts a smile on my face when I give the throttle a squeeze when pulling away from slow traffic or the likes ...... F30/31 has to be even better with the 8 speed box.

Do you know what, everything is relative. It's good for me to drive the the Disco from time to time as I hate to say it but I'm now used to the 335d's acceleration and want more! Problem is I'm used to petrols and problem with this car is it gives SO much ooomph low down you just want more but obviously the torque curve starts going down from then onwards.

Beware - it's addictive

You my friend are in for an absolute treat.

It will be more than your socks that will be blown off.

Not so much for F30. The E9x chassis must have been really poor if it could trouble the traction control light at 40mph on a straight dry road. A 300hp RWD F30 diesel can't do that...in fact I doubt it would in the wet either.

Just shows how sorted the F30 is compared to the older versions.

Yes I'd agree with that NISFAN. Having come from a e90 330d LCI the f30 is a huge improvement.

And you get better fuel economy and don't have to service it twice month.

It seriously is. Mum has an X and my engine has way more character than that and the performance and handling is very similar at the levels I've been to so far. Looking forward to exploring further when it's run in a bit and I've sussed the dsc settings
