Something For The Summer

Well I was having a look for decent drives for over the summer while we are in Scotland and spotted this site.

Looks like a few decent roads to burn some fuel on.

I have added some to my summer list.

Between end of May and September, I will be in Pembrokeshire, moray firth, Dorset, Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire and likely Cornwall as well.

So will be checking out decent 'scenic' or just plain fun routes

Anyhow, there are some ideas for everyone to try over summer

I can recommend the A44 between Llangurig and Aberystwth. After living in Aberystwyth for a few years this road was the main road to civilisation. There are quite a few good roads around there which I used to enjoy. Those were the days!

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be

Cat and Fiddle used to be good but has so many cameras on it it's not worth it - I did find plenty around that area, but to be honest can't tell you the names, just seem to find my way there

Part of one of my favourite local drives.

A87 from Invergarry to the Kyle of Lochalsh.

Fantastic drive both ways, particularly early morning, or a late summer evening.

Cheers, Evo triangle is close by, will give it a run.

IoM TT course will have a run out too in August when back home. (only decent road surface there!)

That's that one added to the list, advantage of a Scottish wife, show her some glens and lochs and she's happy.

Admittedly drive the route a few times but it is rather good.

No, it is not the A82.

BTW, A82 is my local patch, more so north of Fort William, but driven over Rannoch many times in all conditions and times of year.

Think further North, heading in Cape Wrath/Durness direction.

A bit further south, A894 a few miles below Unapool.

Isn't that road only used for diversions only ?
There was talk of upgrading it though to be more suitable for traffic. Not sure.

Agree with that one, particularly when quiet.

Didn't realise there were roads over Rannoch Moor. Driven from Pitlochry to Rannoch Station many a time, very narrow roads. Need to look at a map to confirm some roads.

It is, I designed the rehabilitation of the road and it was opened and used in early March. I'm up there at the end of May when the Bentley owners club are driving it. Motorsport at the Rest goes back to the early 1900's. Such a privileged to work on such a historic route.

I stand ready to be corrected, however one thing I have noticed over last 30 years or so, is how well some of the roads in Scotland are looked after. Only referring to highlands and A9 upwards.

I imagine Glasgow will be as bad as anywhere else.

There are good areas and there are bad areas, as with any road network. However, generally Scotland has significantly lower traffic volumes compared to the rest of the UK and the highest levels tend to be concentrated around the central belt, between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Less traffic = Less damage.

Having said that, highway maintenance budgets have been seen as an easy target but Transport Scotland have been better at adopting innovation than the Highways Agency, realising better value and making budgets go further.
