Drivetrain Malfunction?
Hey guys,
Did a couple 2-3-4 gear pulls on my way home from work today. It was pretty hot outside about 95F. I was in manual shift mode and when I turned on my street I was in 5th gear going about 15mph. I gave the car full throttle (while in 5th gear) and it started to pull then the drivetrain malfunction popped up and car went into limp mode :/ I turned it off for a couple minutes and turned it back on, no more drivetrain malfunction and it seemed to be running normally. No codes popped up on the JB4. Any idea what might have caused this and if it's something I have to look into? Current mods: 2013 335i (PWG) CP DP JB4 AFE Drop-in filter Running 5 gals e85 Thanks in advance

I had a similar issue, got a Malfunctions at WOT and lower RPMs. You maybe misfiring/ blowing out spark. How old are the spark plugs? I changed them to new OE and gapped to .022 and it solved my Drivetrain MalFunc issue.
Also can just cycle the car on-off to clear it, no need wait. Clutch in, and hold the ON/OFF button to turn off, and restart. That way you dont need to pull over in traffic. |

Yeah I believe autoclear is on... otherwise wouldn't my CEL come on because of my DP?

Had that happened to me two weeks ago on the way to the track. Very hot day. It went limp. No codes but the engine light came on. Jb4 was able to clear it. It appeared a few times throughout the day at the track which really sucked. Haven't come back on though. Car still runs good.

Ok well I can tell you what happened just based on reading a statement you made. I can be on the interstate in my car a 6MT FBO car and be cruising in 6th gear. If I go to give my car too much throttle to pass someone without downshifting I get a DT malf. Basically I have deduced it to being the fuel pump crashing. 5th gear an 15mph and you floor it without downshifting..... yeah man your LPFP is asking you to fucking not lol.

I was going to start a thread about this but this thread is already here: Last year I had a DT malfunction a few times all in different circumstances. Two times upon startup after normal driving and one time driving up a hill where I gave it good pedal. A day ago I was cruising on the freeway in ECO and gave about half gas to pass in another lane and it popped up. All of these times I turned the car off and back on and it was gone.
Last year I took the car to the dealer while I was still under warranty and they said they would not look at the car unless I removed my mods as I was up front with them. I took the JB4 and DP off and drove for more than a month and nothing. Put the mods back on and have not seen anything until now, 8 months later. I have pulled codes from time to time showing Valvetronic system de-activated and BV valve jammed shut. But I have seen these codes from time to time without any DT malfunction. The dealer foreman did mention to me that the way the JB4 is wired in there can be voltage changes that can trigger codes, but they were largely unfamiliar with how the tune works. I am starting to wonder if this is some kind of software glitch as on another note, when it happened the other day my clock switched from PM to AM. So my question is: how many people have experienced a DT malfunction with seemingly no ill effects and resolved it simply by a restart?

Anytime you get limp mode there should be a code stored.

Is this true even when autoclear is enabled on the JB4? I just looked at my saved codes and there isn't anything new in there

Yes it will delete the codes. What is best for checking codes is ISTA...there are codes that don't show up in the jb4 application, but they all are there in ISTA.

I have the same issue, except the car throws 2 codes about charge pressure too high, switch off as consequence errors. I get it on hard acceleration, I took it to an indie shop and the car was "perfect" and tech couldn't figure out why it was going into a drivetrain malfunction thing. He mentioned the DME module was flashed last year, prior to me purchasing the car, and the software may be corrupt/problematic. He recommended that I take the car into the bmw dealership and have them reflash the car. I also get the error consistently depending on how hard I drive it

I had this issue a few weeks ago where I'd get the code, go into limp mode, restart and it would go away. Seemed to happen when I put the car in manual mode and drove it a little harder.
I took it to dealer under warranty and they stated it was the wastegate actuator. They replaced it and so far so good! |
