Why can't MPPK be downloaded like map upgrades?

Other than the airbox and the new cover it is just a software download that is generated from the VIN. Seems like the same folks that distribute the map files should be able to distribute the MPPK.

Nope - flashing the MPPK software to the DME is completely different from loading map files into iDrive/Navigation. That, and the software is not actually included in the kit. When you buy the MPPK, you get a red envelope with an authorization code that is used with the proprietary BMW computer system at the dealership to download and flash the software to the DME. It's not done with USB sticks. The DME is encrypted, which is another barrier to flashing, unlike the engine management system on the E46 and E9x cars.

I bought my MPPK from getbmw parts dot com (Tischer BMW) and installed everything but the tune myself. I then took my car and the red envelope with the auth code to my local dealership and paid for 1 hour of labor for them to flash the DME.

I believe an MPPK calibration could be made available by the tuners in the same way PTF has made available a BM3 Stage 0+ (M2) for the F3x and similar calibrations for the F8x.

Yes. I am sure the MPPK will be available to flash yourself soon in the future. If we don't need to flash using ESYS, we can flash the file using MHD ourself. Sport Gauges already update, showing it fully compatible on a non-oem dme flash

You guys just keep dreaming. BMW's not gonna release that code to the public domain, same as they didn't do with the original (2010) N55 PPK. Maybe one of the flash-tuners will come up with a low-impact tune (+2 PSI, basically), but there's a reason that Dinan changed to a "piggyback" tune, and Cobb gave up entirely. Reflashing maps is one thing; the entire DME code is quite another.

Not dreaming, just asking. The MPPK is almost all profit, just like the map updates are.

As are downloaded music and movies, software applications, and everything else computer-related. In this case, someone had to create the code and mappings for the MPPK and thoroughly test them and got paid to do it. Same thing with the map data for the Navigation system - all the new roadways and hundreds of other items had to be inserted into or removed from the database and tested by a team of people paid to do so.

Back to the original topic - the Navigation system and the Digital Motor Electronics are two entirely different systems and are not updated/maintained through the same interface. The DME's code is encrypted to prevent tampering so that emissions controls are not affected by altering the code. That is why you cannot download and install the MPPK the same way you download and install map updates.
