Has the Black Sapphire paint changed?
I previously owned a 2014 430i convertible and a 2013 X3, both in Black Sapphire. I never felt either of these cars were as striking as the previous BMWs I had in Jet Black.
This week I had a 2020 4 Series courtesy car from my dealer in Black Sapphire, and it looked different. The finish was noticeably less metallic and it appeared to have a much deeper, richer, black — much closer to Jet Black. Is it just me, or do I have this right? Did BMW evolve this paint? |

That, along with what the OP has seen are reasons buying parts pre-painted for your car seldom works out and can be spotted by those with a keen eye. Also what you get with cheap paint jobs....even expensive paint jobs by those who a lot without a keen eye. |

In different lighting conditions the same metallic paint can look fairly different as well. It could be a combination of all these factors.

Hi all, was just wondering if anyone knew why this color was phased out? Was there an issue with quality control? did it peel or something? Anyone have this color? Would be grateful if you could tell me how easy it was to maintain or if you had any issues with it. Please forgive me if this has been answered somewhere else, im new to this forum and am doing some research before i join the club! Thanks.

I doubt it unless the colour code has changed. But BSM looks different in certain light conditions. In bright sunlight it will look more charcoal than black. In less bright conditions or if the car has been waxed it will look a deeper darker black.
