New owner with some questions
Hi Everyone,
I've just replaced my mk6 Golf 1.4TSI DSG with a 2014 320i x drive automatic which has covered 26k miles. Just have a couple of questions on the car: 1 The gearbox; the only time the torque converter slips at all is below 5 mph, after this it appears to be locked, I've previously driven a 330d which was 2018 I believe, this allowed some degree of slip depending on the driving mode. 2 again the gearbox; when crawling along in traffic in first gear it doesn't seem particularly smooth, seems to be related to the point above. I May replace the gearbox fluid and possibly the sump although I'm not convinced it will make any difference? Also the car has Sport automatic gearbox with the paddles as standard Apart from the niggles from the gearbox I am very happy with the car. Any advice appreciated on the above points Cheers James |

2015 435d here, gearbox torque converter slips plenty enough (too much - but in my opinion like most autos are).
It might be possible that a gearbox remap has been applied to your car. One potential pointer would be if the gear indicator is present in Drive, i.e.; it shows D1, D2 etc instead of just 'D'. |

Thanks for replying, it shows D when in drive but if selector is pushed to the left it shows S1,S2,S3 etc and if you then touch a paddle it says M1,M2 etc but I believe this is normal behaviour.
I was a little surprised how similar it was to my Golf DSG, was expecting more of a traditional auto box but it shifts almost as quickly as the dual clutch in the Golf |

Yours is displaying as per mine then.
My torque converter definitely slips to higher speeds than 5mph though, especially on low throttle applications. Shifting can be quick, depending on throttle and chassis mode (Sport etc). |

I wonder if it's due to mine being a petrol engined car and to do with the torque output of the engine? I know the boxes are different 8HP45 Vs 8HP70 so could also be this?

You could try resetting the throttle adaption.
1. Push Engine button ON (once; do not start engine) 2. Step on the throttle pedal down (all the way down) 3. Hold it there for 30-40 seconds 4. With throttle still down, push Engine button OFF 5. Release throttle 6. Wait 2 minutes 7. Start car normally. |

Will try resetting the throttle adaptations when I get home from work.
What I mean by slip is when in the same gear and the accelerator is applied the revs go up 500 rpm or so without the road speed increasing |

It will slip in first gear by design as that's how the torque converter works. Lock up will occur in the other gears.
It does sound like you'd benefit from a gearbox fluid change. |

In what gear and speed? If you're talking about anything other than 1st gear from a standstill, are you sure it's not just changing down a gear to accelerate? Mine doesn't slip once it's in a gear... at least I don't think it does!

Ah right, I think it is perfectly normal then and the torque converter lockup clutch is engaged as soon as vehicle is above 5 mph.
The 330d I drove was quite a new one so would have been the newer gearbox it also coasted to idle speed in eco pro where mine doesn't do that either |
