N47 w/o emissions oil needs
It's well documented that these N47 diesels need "emission components friendly" oil, LL04 as recommended by BMW. But what if all the emissions components have been removed or disabled? My non-BMW heritage leads me to believe that I could use any type of oil as long as it was the needed (although highly subjective) viscosity.
Any one out there running regular old synthetic/blend/dino on their emissions-free 328D? |

I'd be very weary of experimenting with cheap oils.
The European N47 timing chain issues were numerous.

If you're going for other synthetics than liqui-moly i'd suggest a diesel synthetic such as Shell rotella, mobil delvac, or chevron delo. I don't think any of those even come in 5w-30 honestly as well.. |

For sake of discussion, let's say that I'm not suggesting a drop in oil quality. I'm more questioning the need for the oil additives that "protect" the emissions components that are no longer on the car.

No idea, probably less zinc. You'll need to find the SDS for bmw oil vs. another brand

I was afraid this was an unexplored topic, so I guess I'll be digging in the Bob The Oil Guy forums to see what's really going on with the "emissions-friendly" oils that come with a massive up-charge. Obviously, we don't have to stop our discussion here... |

I'm over in the Bob forums now attempting to decipher the data that is being dumped from all directions. I'm seeing that most of those guys are looking for protection in 'heavy duty' truck motors that see full-time towing use. And I've yet to find someone specifically address if they would use different oil on a late model truck diesel with emissions removed. |
