Blown B58

Figured I would start a fresh thread for this one as the other one was getting a little confusing.

Long story short I was running a catless DP, AP Intake, and a BM3 Stage 2 (93oct) tune on 91 and using some pretty heavy (+30pts) octane booster to supplement.

One night on the way home we were sitting at a stoplight and got a misfire on Cyl5 and then she started smoking.... Unfortunately I wasn’t logging at the time...

Was debating dropping a used motor in and decided that the old one had to come out anyway so might as well tear into it and see if it could be rebuilt...

Well, we got everything apart and looks like Cyl5 blew the ring lands out...YIKES!! Whats even crazier is that there are literally NO signs of detonation anywhere. The standing theory now is that the injector washed the cyl out and thus the rings seized on the piston and over heated and the bottom lands let go.

We’re gonna try to hone the cyl and drop some CP Carrillo pistons in with new rings and bearings all around (and stick with a 91octane tune). Hopefully it works out...

Very intresting.
I didn't know that an electric arc wire injection cylinder bore could be honed?

This seems to be a common thing on these b58 engines I wonder why?

Why would the injector wash out? What psi is Stage 2? Whatever it is maybe too much for cast pistons.

This is what I was going to say. My understanding is that's why people are sleeving the engines, because the coating on the walls means it can't be machined. Would love to see that proven wrong, but it also may have other negatives to only remove the coating on 1 cylinder.

That's crazy. First time I hear about this issue. I still doubt the Stage 2 tune was the issue. How many miles on the car? How does the rest of the engine look? Cylinder walls, carbon build up, any major wear?

The arc wire spray is (I think) a little less than a half mm thick? A hone would still be able to knock off any glazing from the cylinder walls and provide fresh crosshatching without removing significant material. I'm not an expert on the finish BMW uses but people in the motorcycle world have been rehoning Nikasil coated cylinders for years without issue.

@Dyna+ can you post a picture of cylinder 5 wall?

I am with you on the M54, there is was 1.5mm. The B58 got 0.3mm. This is slightly different.
This is probably the reason whey there is no "oversize" piston as it was in the past.

That is some weird damage. Almost looks like it would have to be a casting defect since there is no damage on top.

Seems to be a cylinder 5 issue?

To be clear I was only thinking of running a ball hone through to refresh the crosshatch and then drop a new set of CP forged pistons in with std rings.

Here’s a pic of the cyl.

Based on your pics that doesn't look bad at all, no gouging or significant scoring on the walls. Did cylinder 5 piston and spark plug look like it was running very rich? VW had an issue with injectors sticking open on the first gen TSI engines that would wash down the cylinder walls and lead to cracked rings/trashed cylinders, but they'd usually misfire a while before anything catastrophic happened.

The piston and spark plug both looked like it was running crazzzzyyyy rich. The one in the middle is Cyl5, that piston basically looks like its been sitting in solvent.

Also, the misfire came on pretty suddenly. The wife was driving me home from the ER and was babying it the whole way.

Where have we seen leaky injectors before? *coughs in N54*
BMW just can't get an engine all the way right.

I was going to pull the cams out but was a bit worried about screwing up the Vanos system. Anyone have a walk through on the proper disassembly procedure (if there is one)?

Yeah that's no good for the long term, you should have ran 91 oct tune for daily, or if you really wanted to use the 93 tune, you could have ran meth or something. Running octane booster all the time is very bad for the engine overall. Either the injector was defective, or it kept spraying fuel to make up for the octane and fueling.

Try this for removing cams:

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...aft/1VnZBxUPq4

You'll need specialized tools to do it the "right" way, but I remember Papadakis Racing got their cams out without special tools. Although they did use the special tool for re-installation. Check out their B58 engine build series on youtube if you haven't already, lots of good information.

Is there a part number on your injectors? Looking on RealOEM it looks like the current F30 B58 fuel injector part number is 13538625396, maybe they changed a design and this supersedes the old part number. I think the TU engine has different injectors (and for sure a different fuel pump).
