well took less than an hour to switch it out. i was able to replace the belt by just removing intake only. easy enough.

how much play is there supposed to be in the tensioner when the car is started? i noticed that its a bit wobbly

Sorry to dig up an old thread but did you need the required tool mentioned in the manual?

I just replaced my belt at 98.8K (living on borrowed time, me thinks!). Old belt still looked pretty good. Was beginning to show some minor fraying along edges.

Got Serpentine belt, Drive Belt Tensioner, Drive Belt Idler Pulley and Idler cover from FCP for just under $158.

Took about 30 minutes.

Tools:
Torque wrench
Torx sockets: T-60, T-50
E- Socket: E-12
Straight slot screw driver
Small Allen wrench to use as locking pin for old tensioner during removal

Only removed the intake housing/ducting. Left electric fan assembly in place. Had sufficient space to access everything. If you have big beefy hands, it may be real tight with fan in place.

Serpentine belt replacement

I have a 2012 F30 335i. I received a "battery not charging" and coolant warning. After checking I noticed that the serpentine belt is completely gone... need to replace it myself, but it seems that its a struggle to find info on Google on how to do it myself. Can anyone assist? Thanks

ok... so my serpentine belt has been replaced... along with the crankshaft pulley. I got the car back and the revs were going up and down. I drove the car and all of a sudden it died completely. I immediately pulled off the road. Opened the bonnet and there is oil everywhere and dripping out like crazy. Car wont start. What could it be? It is a 2012 F30 335i

Can you post a few pics of the engine bay? Belt might have snagged an oil line but it should have been picked up earlier since it would leak everywhere.

I'm sitting on a new belt pondering replacing it. If my tensioner and pulleys still look ok (no wobbling) is it absolutely necessary to replace them? Or would it be ok to just replace the belt?

You can only replace the belt. If you see the outside (non-ribbed) part of the belt shiny/any tears or cracks definitely replace it. Be sure to spin all of your pulleys while the belt is off to see if there is any bearing play/noise

Cool, thanks! I'll do it when I do my oil change next week.
