redeu3, i am getting the same noise that you are getting both with engine on and off. I've kinda given up on trying to get it fix. My dealer fixed it up once but the noise came back after a month. so no point in trying.

I too have the noise when the engine is off, however this is my second replacement steering rack. My original noise was more of a rack rattle when turning and going over bumps at low speed. This second revised rack has improved things, but the noise is still there and now happens when going straight over speed bump or pothole. Am taking it into the dealer again, but am not confident there is a new rack or fix. I only hope they don't make things worse!

I saw somewhere (other forums or here, I can't recall) where bmw has a fix for the car after a certain date the issue is fixed. So there must be a fix right? so the noise we have is not normal, is that correct??

well people said the new 2013 steering rack should have fixed the issue. my car has the new 2013 steering rack installed. And the noise was gone for about a month but gradually came back. now its just as bad as before the new rack was installed. I just hope it doesn't get any worst. well i dont think its normal.
All of the loaners (around 4) i've driven has the issue but the level of the noise is different. so not sure if its normal |

Dropped my car off this morning to have the steering wheel noise looked at again. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to replicate the problem for them this time at the dealership car park, but told them I'm happy to take them to the places where I can make it happen. They gave me a new 328i Msport as a loaner, and it was the first F30 loaner that did not have the noise. Took it over the usual places where I normaly hear and feel it, and nothing. It felt great having a car where you don't have worry about the noise.
I'm also getting them to have a look at the wind noise issue, and they mentioned it is a known issue, and they might replace some clips on the windshield to see if that helps. Will post updates when I get the car back. |

Update time, so who here has had the new rack put in and have done at least 1k or 2k and definitely have the noise back or still there.
My rack was changed early to mid year and is still very noisy and thumpy.. I have a feeling they would of got the rack sorted by now, especially with the Touring, GT and 4 series out. Interested in recent experiences.

Ive contacted my Perth dealership again and advised that sound is still there/coming back and I was told that is surprising, as everyone that has had a rack replacement in Perth has said it has fixed the problem... find that a bit hard to believe.. BMW AG really needs to pull their fingers out on this one...

That is disappointing tonyzale.. I would be feeling mighty angry by the 4th rack replacement.. Did they also replace your steering column as well?

I'm in Houston and have been apparently waiting on a steering rack from Germany for 2-3 weeks now. I believe it was supposed to be released this past Monday but haven't heard anything.

Not to certain on the specifics. My car was in to replace a strut and they decided to address a tsb to replace the steering rack. My SA doesn't really tell me anything, but all I know is the release date from Germany has been pushed back 3 times now, almost another week each time.

My rack was replaced about 5k ago and is still going okay. I have now developed a supercharger whine that is directly correlated with engine speed (anyone that's had a recent Audi turbo will know this whine well)- to which they reckon is normal...

The word from BMW is that some noise is normal. The hydraulic steering in the previous models used to cover up a lot of the noises you see. Now with the electric version, BMWs customers are able to hear all of the inconsistencies in design that lead to some cars exhibiting rack rattle and others not.
I mean, that makes sense. Right? |

I have the same problem in my 320D F30. I reported it at the last service and they said they could not find anything wrong with the steering column/rack. I was told they applied a new version of the software and to see if that made any difference.
