European Delivery Questions - Please Help
Hi everyone, this is my first post and I'm really excited about owning a BMW in the future. Any information you can share will help. I have never owned a BMW, my current car is a C350 Coupe (10 months now), and I owned a 2010 S5 (for 8 months).
I'm really excited about the 428i/435i or whatever they want to name it. European delivery is extremely intriguing to me especially since a Honeymoon might be in store Summer '13. So here are my questions: 1. How accurate is it to get 14% off MSRP? Is this percentage negotiable? What is the standard % off? Also can you combine % off with other offers? 2. How accurate are the delivery dates / wait time, because timing is important. 3. Was looking into June - August ED, anyone mind sharing their flight cost around those periods? I'll be flying from LAX. 4. Is two weeks enough to explore Europe? Did anyone have the car shipped back at two weeks (instead of extending 2 week insurance) and vacationed for another 1 week (=3 weeks total)? 5. Exclusive colors. Do you get any exclusive paint color choices since its ED, or is it a straight allowable U.S Order? 6. People who leased a ED car, was the residual or money factor significant or immaterial? 7. Any recommendations? |

1. Technically, it's not 14% off. ED MSRP is 8% off US MSRP. ED invoice is another 7% off of that price. This applies only to the BASE price of the car. The invoice price for all options is 9% off of MSRP. No discount on destination charge. If you want accurate numbers, build your car here: http://bmwconfig.com/BmwConfig/Config.aspx and be sure and select Euro Delivery Munich Pick up from the drop down on the right. You can combine other offers with ED pricing. How close you get to ED invoice (before other offers) is up to your negotiation skills and/or your dealer.
2. After you commit to the car, they will let you pick 3 delivery dates. Once you do that, and they confirm, it is locked in 100% 3. June thru August is going to be expensive, not only for flights, but hotels once you get over there. 4. Two weeks is a good amount of time. I believe you get 30 days of insurance coverage included? 5. No exclusive anything. ED cars are exactly like the US versions. You will get a medical kit + warning triangle when you pick your car up. Keep them with your luggage, else they get taken away when your car goes through customs. 6. Dunno, I did traditional financing. 7. Recommendations: do a lot of searching on this (and other forums). There are hundreds of people that have shared their ED adventures. You'll read more, then surely have more questions. |

Yes, I seem to remember it needs Silverlight to work properly. Try to download and get it to work, that site is really the best for getting the ED invoice for your car. You can of course do it yourself via a calculator and the discounts I mentioned above.

Just build a car 335i w/ M Package + Goodies.
U.S MSRP: $55,260 ED MSRP: $51,455 (6.89% off) ED Invoice: Assuming its 7% off, I'm looking at $47,853. Sounds right? |

The ED MSRP applies only to the BASE price of the car. All options are regular MSRP, and you subtract 9% to get to options invoice price. Re-read my original post regarding the discounting. You need to calculate the base car cost + options costs + $895 destination charge. |

$41,995 (ED Base) + MSRP of Add ons $10,160
Base Car Price: $41,995 Options $ 9,246 (10,160 x .91) Destination: $ 895 Total = $52,136 ? I hope I did my math correctly this time. Base Car Price (ED Invoice): $39,056 ($41,995 x .93) Options: $9,246 Destination: $895 Total = $49,197 So I'm looking at potentially $49 to $52k? Last edited by aceking4u; 11-16-2012 at 02:55 PM.. |

BTW you can also get the options discounted. It all depends on the CA you use. I paid invoice prices for my options. PM me and I can direct you a few guys in LA that won't give you any hassle.

I was looking into additional savings. Every state, is different, but in CA you gotta pay use/sales tax unless the car was first used in another state or country within the first 90 days. I'll try to make this as short as possible.
Contract Signing Date Prior to ED Built Date: 01/01/13 (Example) Build Completion Date: 01/08/13 Munich Arrival Date: 01/31/13 Return Car Date: 02/14/13 Car shipped back to US: 04/01/13 In this scenario, I shouldn't have to pay sales tax correct? Here is a brief reference " If the property is purchased (delivered) and first functionally used outside of California for more than 90 days, it is presumed to have been purchased for use outside California. Storage of the property outside of California may be included in the 90-day period provided the property is first functionally used outside the state prior to the storage period." I don't think there is any way to get around sales tax; you need to complete the purchase transaction before you pick the car up and the tax is charged at that time. It would be interesting to see if you could argue it otherwise though.

Regardless of all the above I just wrote, your dealer is going to be required to charge you sales tax on your order, which they pay to CA. And you have to pay for the car in full (or lease) before your trip. So your only option is to try to ask the state for your tax back, after you paid it via your dealer. Ain't gonna happen. If you really don't want to pay sales tax, just trade in a car for the equivalent price of the car you're buying. Worked for me |

They used examples like if you purchased a new car, and your job relocates you after your purchase, then you aren't required to pay use/sales tax. So theres definitely exceptions to the rule. Any Tax Lawyers or Agents here? |

ED Leasing is essentially the same as domestic leasing. The only difference it s slightly higher money factor to account for the payment BMW makes for you while the car is in transit. This won't be the case if you lease outside of BMWFS. All residuals are the same.

There are no exclusive ED colors. I believe the only exclusive color is Estroil Blue for the M-Sport. I'm not familiar with the Luxury or Modern lines.
There is some type of BMW Individual Program. It's on the website, but I didn't know about it until after I ordered. But, I don't know anything about it. My 335i M-Sport is expensive enough, if you know what I mean. The only thing I'm aware of that is ED unique is the temporary euro license plate. I saw one on the front of a red M-Sport on the 101. It was cool looking and meaningful to me and maybe 12 other guys in the greater LA area. Exclusive club! I saw someone do a personalized CA license plate with his ED letter, space and 4-digit number. He put the red German euro sticker on it. It was interesting looking. Again, about 15 guys will get it. |

The Individual program is not tied to ED. It's technically available to anyone, but very few dealers are familiar with the process. And very few buyers are keen on the cost premiums. The price for admission is usually north of $3,500 for a 3 series. Chances of configured lease with Individual treatment are slim at best. The additional cost does not directly correlate to market value. Thus the term "Individual".

Well, that's unfortunate. But you acknowledge that CA wants every penny, so you can be sure that 90 day tax rule will be impossible to apply to your situation. People have been doing ED for 10 years or more. Never read about anyone avoiding sales tax that way. Plus, like I said, you have to PAY UPFRONT (including tax) for the entire car, before you go over there to pick it up.

You guys been a great help. I think you nailed it when you stated that you will most likely have to pay sales tax first, and then ask for it, via appeal etc. I think that's the route I will most likely go. I'm pretty confident I'm going to do ED.

It doesn't take 90 days from when you do ED, to have your car arrive back in the states. Your dealership is going to process all the registration paperwork as soon as it gets back on-shore, so you can't delay that. In all honesty, you're wasting your time.

Use Edmunds.com. Invoice pricing came out essentially the same, and their website works MUCH better than the bmwconfig site.
