Help! Broken piece on 2015 f33 roof

Went away for the weekend and wife told me she heard something snap when operating the roof. Looks like its just a little plastic covering piece that doesn't *seem* to serve a function?

Can someone tell me:
1) what it does
2) can I get it replaced
3) where

Thank you in advance! Pics attached of the broken one, and the non-broken one for reference.

I believe thats a roof rack mount cover. Someone can correct me if im wrong. I don't think you can buy them separate and that the trim needs to be replaced completely?

Looks like you have a vert (F33)...check here and you may be able to find the part:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...MW-435iX&mg=54

But use your own VIN to make sure it's the correct piece...

This is correct. Looks like it can be ordered but will need to be painted and probably a pain to replace

Thanks everyone. If it says its a "cover" I'm assuming it probably doesn't have a huge purpose? The only thing I thought of was water getting in but the working one is definitely not water tight.

Did a little investigating and I think it just keeps this middle piece in place. Because this middle piece isn't attached to the car it can slide up and down about a centimeter. The non-broken one stays still. Broken one can move. Doesn't seem to interrupt anything with the roofs movement.

Thanks again everyone

Update on this. I finally took it to BMW to get it replaced. Figured I would fill people in on the cost:

Total cost estimate = $2,200
My Carmax warranty is paying $1,500 of it.

My cost
$300 deductible for warranty
$400 out of pocket

$2,200. For a piece of plastic. SMH!

Also - the $400 that Carmax warranty WON'T cover is the adhesive needed to glue this trim onto the car. lol.

Wow! Im assuming they're replacing the whole trim along the roof. I know on the e93 the little piece is available to buy separate, I don't think it was more than $50 excluding paint but I could be wrong.

$2,200! How much of that is labor?

Did they even have a guess as to why it broke?

Yeah they have to replace the entire trim across the top.

Yep! Unsure, I'll get the full financial breakdown when I go to pick it up. And no, they had no explanation. The service tech I'm working with is a bit clueless.

They did give me a brand new x3 M40 as a loaner for the week, which I'm not complaining about.
