My dad takes about 24 seconds to get to 30mph and even he gets nowhere near the official figures!

He has a Volvo V50 1.6d eDrive... Woefully underpowered and claims mid 70mpg combined.
This summer we borrowed their holiday flat. He normally gets about 54mpg on the around 1000 miles round trip. I got 50.1mpg out of an almost twice the size engine on a quicker and faster driven trip...

It does seem that larger engines fair better.

As long as it's not stupidly poor (which it's not) then I'm fine with it and the performance of the 320d in no way compares to the 335d, so no point in comparing the fuel figures either . Let's get things in proportion ...... where can you get a 5 seater family saloon that does 0-60 under 5 seconds AND does nearly 40 to the gallon . You would have been laughed at 10 years ago if you thought this was possible.
Well said, sir.

I don't think they measure the official figures with the handbrake on

A 335d makes no financial sense at all. So trying to do a comparison is stoopid and pure man manths.

I agree with what has been said about the power/ economy ratio. But a 330d S Drive has far better economy and is also very fast.

I would personally steer clear of a 320d X Drive (personnaly). It is a lot slower (but not slow!) and will probably only return around 40mpg in the real world. My 335d was giving 36mpg. A 320d S Drive will fare much better.....

Of course it does........ in comparison to an M3.

And when I purchase an M3, that will be perfect financial sense compared to err.... hold on a mo....

But the fact that dealers use these numbers to show punters how little fuel is going to cost them in a year. It defies belief that the laws of fair advertising don't step in to stick up for the consumer.
Problem is what else can the dealers use? The idea that there is a comparison, however flawed, is the only 'legal' consumption figures they can use. Anything else is a variable and can also mislead.

Everyone in the related industries know the official NEDC test is in need of total revision, but... it is a political hot potato. Not that there couldn't be a better, more representative test regime, but think of cutting approximately 20% average off of fuel consumptions, where does that leave CO2 emission targets over the past few years? Totally flawed and undermined.

A revised test is in progress, many experts have proposed much better and more realistic test regimes, (the USA revised their EPA test) but it appears there is not really the will to get it done too quickly, I wonder why?

Makes financial sense to me, as my other option is an S4 (given I want a fast AWD estate) and that will struggle to get half the mpg I get if I drive it how I drive my 335d!

I guess if you follow my line of arguement, anthing more expensive than a Dacia Sandero makes no financial sense.

A 335d is a car you buy with your heart more than your head I think.

Of course, if the wife is asking: "yes dear, it's a diesel and it gets over 50mpg. and does 155mph and 0-62mph in 4.8s"

Exactly! We are all kidding ourselves that the cars we have are what we need. They're what we want that best fits our desires.

I certainly didn't buy a 335d to save fuel money compared to any other car..It's simple really, I wanted a car which was as quick as possible compared to it's ave MPG.... and which I could afford. Is there any other car with a wider 'gap' between its 0-60 time and ave MPG, up to about £45k OTR. That's a genuine question, not a challenge.

Ah. Yes. Good point. And if I wasnt a greedy as I am, wanting something .5 secs (or whatever the actual figure is) quicker, that would have fulfilled my desire.

Just some more facts to add to the mix

I had an S4 (3.0 supercharged) that gave me 22mpg day in, day out. Fab drive, annoying fuel stop habit. About 220 miles per tank

My 335d has 8k from new, with ACS power control fitted. Lifetime average is 37mpg. During my weekly commute I see 40-45mpg with no open roads. I have seen 55mpg, no BS, but conditions have to be specific. On the weekends, I let her rip. Usually 480 miles per tank-ish and I mix up premium and supermarket fuel.

My calculations, if it's of interest, are all kept in an app called Roadtrip. Very useful indeed.

335 with mods including springs makes it as good as the S4 to drive with none of the drawbacks. The 335 is in fact quite a lot quicker, off the line and faster. Only negative, lack of exhaust noise!

So there seems to be some consistency with other contributors feedback.

I really bought it for fuel economy ...replacing e92 335i and it works however performance was my priority. And I was curious how it is to live with diesel. Have some thoughts now about coming back to petrol but....we'll see...but if I wanted to be a real SAVER I would have gone for 318d
