8AT Whine in Reverse (435i)

Hi guys

Quick Q, is it normal for a F32 435i to have quite a loud whine in reverse?

Thanks

Yes. Not very loud but it does increase in volume as you back up faster. Its normal out of the 8 speeds.

Ok phew, thanks!

Mine definitely emits an audible sound which gets louder and louder as reverse speed increases. I'm not talking about holding my foot down on the accelerator here while reversing, but it does get quite loud imo! And always found it quite embarrassing when people can hear it outside the car, so just wanted to check!

I will really listen to mine today. I have never heard a whining noise from mine. I would think you wouldn't hear noises like that cause they don't use straight cut gears in the tranny like they did in the 60's. Could be the rear end not set up properly.

Thanks! I'll try and take a video of it. I notice sometimes it's more audible than others, perhaps once the car has warmed up.

Reverse gears are usually straight cut, that's why they whine.

Can't say I've ever noticed it any more or less than any other car I've ever owned, manual or auto... but it's been a few years since I've had a manual, so memory could be foggy there…

I never had this on my previous E88 120i 1 series manual though? Or the E82 125i automatic? Or any other cars I've ever driven?

Why this one?

It's definitely a very noticeable noise. Will get a vid.

I've noticed this in just about every automatic transmission vehicle I have ever had...

I've noticed it in a manual VW Polo before. Never in a BMW though. Incl X6 6spd auto, '14 range rover etc.

I thought all cars had transmission whine in reverse due to the way the reverse gears are cut (straight vs helical)?

I haven't driven my F30 fast enough in reverse yet to notice, but pretty much every car I've ever owned, both stick and auto, have had a whine that gets louder the faster you go in reverse. There was even a caller on Click and Clack that asked about it once.

I also have the whining sound when reversing in my 2011 F10 with 8AT. It's been that way since day one. The auto transmission in my last 5 series (E60) didn't do it. Of course that wasn't an 8 speed though.

My 328i 8AT does whine on reverse, but this's my first AT so I can't tell if it's any worse than other AT.

Quick vid I threw up.

Intentionally blurred. Anyways, it's only for the sound Please turn your speakers up. Louder in person.

Thanks

But... Isn't it the soft whizz of the turbo at low revs?? I'm pretty sure of it.
For me it's absolutely normal

Ok interesting comments. So some people don't notice it, some people do notice it, but it sounds like it's not as loud as mine?

I don't think it's the turbo whistle as revs aren't high enough (it's almost as low as idle revs), not to mention it doesn't sound like a turbo.

Anyways, here is a voice recording I did today. Yes voice, so don't wait for the pic in the vid to move

If it's normal then that's fine, but just want to make sure as it sounds odd to me!

Thanks.

Seems normal to me. I don't know if yours is any louder, but mine has a whine too. Just like any of my previous cars BTW. I don't know how old you are, but I remember some older cars had this very, very loud whine. I mean you could hear it in the whole block. We all thought it was normal and just a guy backing up a little fast, that's all.

My 2013 did. My 2014 does not. However it may start doing it after some more miles don't know. My X5 does not.
