I need an open grill on the right, rather than a partially open -- is that because of the hot climate version (S823A), which I also have?

Thank you very much
that I have no idea since I have a 320, maybe someone here with a 328 can help you out with that, when I was at the dealer yesterday I did notice that all 328 base models have vented fog covers on both sides unlike 320 base models which are completely closed.

Appreciate your reply. Spent some time scouring the BMW electronic parts catalog (ETK). Here's what I found for a 328i:
  • All variants use the partially open left grid (51 11 7 300 739)
  • Then for the right side, it is either fully open or partially open
Us the right side Fully Open grid (51 11 7 279 702), for any of the following option combinations:
  • With High Speed Synchronization (S840A)
  • With Automatic Transmission (205A), Sport Automatic Gearbox (S2BTBA), Trailer Coupling (S3ACA) & Hot Climate version (S823A)
  • With Automatic Transmission (205A), Trailer Coupling (S3ACA) & Hot Climate version (S823A)
  • With Sport Automatic Gearbox (S2BTBA), Trailer Coupling (S3ACA) & Hot Climate version (S823A)
For all other combination of options, use the right side Partially Open grid (51 11 7 300 740)

So in my case, since I have a manual transmission & the hot climate version, I will use the partially open grid on the right.

Hope that helps!

I have a 328 and did this mod.
if you have an oil cooler (comes with sport line here but maybe other areas it comes standard)
you need a full open cover.
if you dont have an oil cooler you only need partially open.
i used partially open on mine.

but all you have ot do is match what you already have.
if you have a 328 you SHOULD have brake cooling ducts standard and you should have partial open already.
if you have an oil cooler it is very evident in the passenger side wheel well. you will see a radiator there.
if you have that then you need full open on that side.

It is very apparent when you pull the grill off which one you need as there are vents/scoops on the 328i that need an opening to work, and as said above here a radiator on models with the oil cooler. If you look at pictures of cars with it you can clearly see it through the gap in the grill. I have a baseline that I converted the bumper of and it had nothing but the two vents/scoops in it. So I used partial open partial open. I am sorry about the photos they were unintentionally deleted from my photo site and I could not find any back ups.

  • Second, how did you determine where to make the other cut on the Sports line grill (again, please look at attached picture)?
  • Finally, what did you use to cut the Sports line grille?
BTW, are these the correct part numbers:
51117300739 Sport line lower grill, left
51117300740 Sport line lower grill, right
51117293105 Sport line lower grill trim, left
51117293106 Sport line lower grill trim, right

Appreciate your assistance
Thank you very much
If you are cutting the partial open grills you will need to just line them up and see where they contact the bumper. In addition because the grill is partial open you will have to figure out a way to make the bumper black around the area where it cuts into the grills opening. Otherwise since your car is not black it will be obvious where the bumper hangs out below the grill. The lines of the two grill pieces are not the same and the bumpers are not identical between the sport line and the base line. They are close but not identical.

I painted mine black because I didn't like the silver color of them on my red and black car. the lights having silver around them I can live with for the moment.

My plan it to install brake duct inlets in the near future so they will be going away.

I have the fully closed version right now as it is a 320i manual. If i buy the fully closed version with the whiskers will I still need to make the cuts to the trim?

If you have a basic 320 (that is no line), am almost certain that you will have to do what I am doing with my no line 3287 -- cut the lower grills to make them fit. Seems that those of us with no line cars have a different front bumper than those with a line

BTW, I have partially open lower grills, but that may be because I have "hot climate" version (S823A) -- worth checking on your car as well -- and I also have a manual transmission

partially open Grids

Hi guys,

Being that I blew all my money on my headlights- the Msport bumper is going to be postponed for another budget.

Thanks for this.

Ordered parts
51117300739
51117300740
51117293106
51117293105

Also one thing I would like to mention- the partially open grids look to have a crease in it so let's say you needed to fully "open it" I'm sure you could grab the dremel and cut it off.

picture will show the cutout

$77 shipped from ECStuning.com

Excited for this!

Well,

I finally got around to installing Sports line lower grills with accent rod.

Rather than use a tie, I elected to use 3M two-sided automotive tape to secure the grills on their top since the slots and tabs align on their bottom, but not their top (I removed these tabs); I used a Dremel tool to shave down the Sports grills where needed.

Attached are five photos, annotated with comments as to what you need to watch out for:
  • 0 Original basic line lower grill
  • 1 How to shape the Sports grill
  • 2 Tabs on Sports grill
  • 3 Location of tape.
  • 4 With sports grill. Please note that I left the two-sided tape visible for the picture only; I subsequently, trimmed it with an Xacto knife.

Think, I am going to get the finishing rods chromed to match my front bumper lip accent.

Hope that helps.

Is that double sided tape coming out the top of the foglight insert or is your foglight area cracked?

It is double sided tape before I trimmed it -- took photo so you could see what went in there

Hey guys,

After trimming and testing, I was able to get it to sit how I liked it. Only problem is, the double sided tape up top isn't contacting and holding as I like it to. How did you guys get the double sided tape to hold?
First photo is how much I trimmed, I had to trim down all the way around for it to sit flush.

Here's a photo of fitment. It's almost perfect but it sags up top slightly. Any suggestions to how I can get the 3m to hold? Thinking of double layering it to add some more work room... oh yea, I wrapped the Whisker in some left over Carbon fiber 3D

Does anybody knows if adding the "Luxury Line" whisker on a base line is easier, meaning doesn't need to remove the black cover?

Does anybony knows if we can add the luxury line whiskers in the base line, not changing the "black" cover around the fog light?
Someone in Norway I believe said so, but his post was not detailed.
