You're not wrong there, Chris

The B58 isn't the best engine money can buy, but it's the best engine BMW makes right now

Hmmmm.

It's a better all rounder but not as good as the V12 or V8 right now.

Ok, I'd forgotten about them.....

WardsAuto, whose annual engine awards seem to be well respected both in the US and elsewhere, has included BMWs I-6 petrol engines in its "Wards 10 Best Engines" Trophy for 27 years in a row - the B58 was in the top 10 in 2016 and 2017. Nuff said

The headache continues today. Think I’m getting a bit light headed over it all because I saw a 2 series convertible before and started picturing myself in one!

Does anyone know if the F30 M Sport still comes with tinted rear windows? Or is it just the Shadow Edition that comes with them?

Have a drive of a 2 series first. I had one as a courtesy cat and with regard to quality it did feel like a step down.

Privacy glass on the F30 is an option. It comes part of the M-Sport plus pack but can be added separately.

Go Shadow. It has lots of the toys you want but much cheaper than speccing a non Shadow car up. Then just add the bits it's missing....

What was your old Alfa? I had a 2.2 159 before moving to BMW.

Get the 40i in whatever form you can, while they still exist. You will not regret it for a second.
I don't know what you have been listening to, maybe the N20 but certainly not the B48. The engine is quiet and refined. In fact it is the same modular engine as the 340i but with two cylinders less, and no fake engine noises pumped through the speakers....not noisy at all.
Not what I recall, sorry. They sounded a lot more tappety which at certain revs gave it a diesel like noise somehow.
The 3l lump ever sounds like Diesel, ever...

Re; petrol or diesel?

Hi everyone, if you're talking about new or nearly new, then by all means stick to diesel. It's when they they get to five or six years old & are on their second or third owner that the running costs can skyrocket, especially if they've started off life as a neglected company car. Personally, I've never been a big fan of modern diesels (common rail), and I have to agree with earlier post that said the B48 is very quiet and with more than enough power for everyday driving.

Just completed 436 miles of motorway and town driving.
Filled up with 51 litres of petrol this gave me an average of 38.85 mpg.
320i xdrive.

The rest of my mileage is made up of a to b driving, going the shops and visiting family, etc. Very few long journeys or motorway driving these days.

Got to say, the Diesel engine has served me very well, I only ever have to fill up once a month and this normally sees me through. On average I pretty much get 500 miles out of a full tank. MPG is currently at 58, but have just done an airport run so it's not exactly an accurate picture.

Just been reading an article about rising fuel prices and I'm wondering if now is the right time for me to make the switch back to petrol, rather than taking another diesel for the next 4 years. The only thing holding me back is whether or not the fuel economy on the petrol is going to be anything similar to what I've got now. I know it depends on driving style but there's no way I'm going to get 500 miles out of a 320i M Sport Auto!

Can anyone shed any experiences on petrol models and how they fare with fuel?

Thanks!
Hi, I have a 320i M-Sport with a sports auto box RWD. I have just filled up my car and I got 485 to the tank with about 10 miles left showing on the computer. I usually get about 450 so this was a bit higher than usual.

My average mpg since buying the car new in Dec 2015 is 38.5 mpg over 27,000 miles. I do mixed driving, motorway, A road and short town trips. In eco pro on a run I have had 53 mpg on a journey.

I had driven lots of high powered BMW''s in my previous job but figured that the 320i was all I needed or wanted. The B48 2.0 turbo engine is good. 0-60 in 7.2s. 290 Nm of torque. Work's well with the sports auto 8AT. (and adaptive suspension)

I have never been a fan of diesel, even when the government were pushing it. If I were to renew my car, I would buy exactly the same car, same spec but with lumbar support...and a different colour just for a change.

Xdrive will give lower mpg, but I bought a second hand set of winter wheels and tyres and they were great last winter, and happy with the feel and handling of RWD.

See if you can test drive a 320i, most would be surprised how good they are.
320i with either xdrive or auto has 270Nm instead of 290.

I asked myself this question 2 years back (when i had a bit more money to waste than now) so i bought a 16 plate 4/5 month old 440iGC, I was truly getting 18 / 20 mpg Auto, it never saw eco pro and only sport plus mode i concede, for me it was absolute guzzler around town, awesome sound, so its totally irresistible to plant the foot down but i truly hated the gearbox and i thought the car felt cumbersome in cornering, i sold it and moved back to diesel and manual and binned about 17k in the exchange! The difference in fuel price is like humungous compared to the 325d i have now...unless you drive like your nan..

But people do come and look at a 440i GC, bloody awesome looking thing, haven't seen too many bother with the 325d incomparable except in fuel cost!

Hi from another 320d owner, I suggest wait it out for G20 and see how economy pans out in the next year, you are not old I am sure there will be plenty opportunities to switch in future, as others also said it's pointless to switch from one 4 cylinder engine to another one, you want progression.

Thats how I see things and happy to drive my car for another 2 years, its efficient, looks good and managing in that family duties too.

Don't spend your hard earned money jumping between cars

I reckon there’s still quite a bit of mileage left in diesels yet, especially BMW’s as they seem to get to grips development and with all of the mandatory tests. Much of the bad press comes from older diesels and the general public, not knowing any better, and believing whatever they are told.

We’ll probably all be driving electric cars before long so let’s enjoy whatever we can, while we can.
