You might be able to find a used civic si in acceptable condition that satisfies your goal of somewhat reliable, fun, and cheap (though maybe more than 5000). The older si has a high revving charismatic engine, it's tossable, has good handling, stick shift, and is generally reliable. Either way, I think you have to think along those lines with your constraints though - older, fun for the segment, Japanese car. As suggested above an old accord with the v6 is a good option too. The Nissan Altima and maxima of old also came in trims that featured a sport tuned suspension and a solid v6 engine. They have a cvt, which blunts the car, but with the limitations you listed, you have to be willing to compromise some. At some point, there might have been a stick option too, I'm not sure.

Alternatively just go for reliability. It won't be easy to find both fun and reliable for 5000. I don't think an old e46 3-series is your answer. On the bright side, if you just get a reliable commuter, when the time comes to get your next bmw or whatever, it'll be all the more amazing coming from something like an old Corolla.

Don't get a Scion tC. Anything but a Scion tC. I'd go E90 328i, definitely reliable and definitely a fun car.

How soon do you need a car? If not urgent I would think about getting a pre purchase inspection by a trusted specialized BMW mechanic on this car, or keep looking. Carfax doesn't tell the whole story, there's an front end accident reported (could be minor or major), oil last shown changed in 2005. See if they have service records.

Overall not a great candidate IMO based on the info I see, look great in pics though. There's great advice in this thread, see Fuller's reply especially for a practicality standpoint.

Man I was hoping it looked good overall.

I mean asap because my lease is up took it back two weeks ago just got back from Canada I live in the suburbs and just stay in the house cause I have no car lol.

Umm weirdly my insurance for scions Honda's vws are really expensive but mildly cheaper when I put in a bmw I have no clue why. I had Geico and looking to go with progressive. State Farm doesn't want me.

Don't wanna pay 300 a month for a civic or scion that's just ridiculous. I'm just quite confused

Probably should've started the search at least a month ago, but my vote is still Miata!
