For the MT I used MOTUL or redline fluids but previously have used LUCAS with great results and lower temps as well. Mainly use MT-90 weight (factory spec). For the Diff I use 75w90( for spirited driving and also it's the factory spec). But you can upgrade all the way from a 90 to 110 to 140 if you track or drive the car hard or launch it a lot. M3 uses 140 in the diff.

DO NOT USE MTL (Even though Redline spec page says it's ok), it's too thin for our trans and any hard driving will result in bearing/ syncro wear/ whining and will destroy your trans.

What will you use for rear end oil?

Any basic instructions that your following?
Going with Pentosin or genuine BMW which is around $30-35/liter for the MTF fluid since they make the OEM one. I just to get the right weight. For the diff I'll get genuine BMW which is around $20/liter.

Going to have my mechanic do this since I don't have access to the a lift and I don't want to get the pump/etc for the job. I know he's done this a lot and for the trans I'd rather leave it to him.

I was thinking of buying motul atf iv for my tranny fluid. it has a approval from ZF for use and instead of $22-25 a liter it's $10-13

Has anyone done a legit search for all needed components for a proper ZF trans service?

Wondering what the total DIY cost is.

Anyone have part numbers handy?

They have kits on fcp euro and ecs, I don't think I'm allowed to state prices here for other company's but it's reasonably priced

Careful on FCP euro. Some kits do not have the ZF fluid. Personally I wouldn't touch any other fluid... these new transmissions can be pretty touchy with the smallest variations in fluid properties. Definitely worth buying the filter from them though because lifetime replacements so at 140k miles you can just throw one on for free.

EDIT: Or do you guys think this wouldn't qualify under their lifetime thing?

I have always been skeptical on their lifetime replacement thing.

How can they possibly offer this, no strings attached- FOREVER... without losing money.

Im stumped.

Think about how many people will actually use it? The majority of people will sell their cars long before those components fail. The marketing is good to get people coming back again and again to buy parts for their cars. Lose a little to gain a lot in the long run.

This is what I figured must be the case. I guess I'll find out. Just bought some brake pads and rotors from them haha.

I was too until my cousin got a free set brake pads lol. You buy the replacement part, send back the old one, and then they refund the replacement. But what Solidjake said is right... How many people actually go through more than one of the same expensive item on their car.

Was doing a bit of research. Apparently the recommended ATF for the ZF 8HP transmission is:

Shell L12108

BMW PN: 83 22 2 152 426

Initial filling is 8.8L so depending on how much you get out... buying 8L of ATF should be the trick but maybe you dont use it all.

Brake Fluid should be changed every 20k to 30K.
Engine oil should be done every 5K MAX!
Spark Plugs change every 60 to 80K
Antifreeze should be changed about every 60K.
Idler's/ pulleys/ tensioners should last about 100 to 120K. After that should be changed along with new serpentine belt.

Now before all you by the book of what BMW says followers. I DO NOT AGREE with anything what BMW says other than Brake Fluid change intervals. I am a mechanic and have seen what prolong use of fluids (following dealer maint plans) can do to parts of the car. I can tell you dealerships are not in the market to keep the car on the road longer than warranty and it is all cost savings and how they can get away with less money spent on maint of the car to just escape any major repairs when car is in their warranty period. After warranty ends they are off the hook and want you to pay those outrageous prices for parts if something breaks.
BMW actually says do your spark plugs every 6 oil changes. That would put it at 60k miles MAX for spark plugs.

As far as I can tell this fluid comes up for e90 and older? I have only found ZF Lifeguard for the 8 speed :/

Where did you see it fits our cars? I prefer your pricing for fluid haha.

EDIT: Nevermind google hoodwinked me and sprinkled in some cheaper fluid for older cars in the results when I tried lookin up this oil. It seems this is identical to lifeguard 8 fluid. In fact it usually comes up as lifeguard fluid.

Definitely change it. ZF recommends changing the fluid at 50k-75k miles for this transmission. The Bentley manual states 100k. I would change it ASAP, especially if you plan on keeping the car long term. These transmissions can cost as much as 5 or 6 grand used, you don't want to go down that road.

I think however ZF says to change it at 50k if operated under "harsh conditions" so I'm sure stretching it to 100k if you drive your car normally with a bit of spirited driving in your commutes will be fine. I would not wait longer than 100k if you are going to change it at all.

That's my personal limit.

Not to thread jack but they give you credit when you return a product.
At least how it worked for me.
Bought oil change kit from them
Bought another oil change kit from them
Returned kit #1
Got $55 credit back.

Costs me $20 to mail them the old oil so basically moving forward im paying $20 for an oil change because I plan on using the credit to buy oil change kit #3 from them when the time comes.

Yah, they issue a refund up to the original cost of the item. I'm not sure what determines how much they give you towards the replacement, or how frequently you get a true free replacement i.e. full refund, but in my cousins brake pad case he got a full refund minus shipping. Or at least that's how it was described it to me.
