Warranty Claim Woes.........

...car is in for the 3yr end of warranty check and i mentioned a ticking noise coming from the rear when going round corners or over speed bumps (same kinda noise as when you get a stone stuck in the tyre). F31 which stndard apart from aftermarket wheels (which i bought after BMW wrongly diagnosed a previous noise as a buckled wheel.....but lets not go there) So i get a call

BMW: Its your wheel spacers
ME: Dont have any
BMW: thats what mechanic says
ME: I DO NOT HAVE ANY
BMW: Must be the wheels
ME: really? wheels make a ticking noise?
BMW: you will have to put OEM wheels back on and bring it back in
ME: dont have any
BMW: We can sell you some
ME:

Just needed to vent.....

It's the BMW CFT - Component Failure Timer. Tick, tock, tick, tock. A bit like playing Beat the Bong on Capital Radio - how long do you dare to keep driving until something else fails on your car ?

Unfortunately you're on a bit of a hiding to nowhere IMO if you're trying to make a warranty claim with anything visibly aftermarket that *could* be construed to be part of the noise. (ie: wheels).

If it was your HVAC not working or something it'd be far easier to argue the case that the wheels have absolutely no bearing on the problem in discussion.

If you were local I'd let you use my OEM wheels for the warranty claim.
Bit of a pita but as Russbmw said, you're kinda stuck as they are aftermarket wheels.

So my polite complaining to the service manager obviously worked. They "found" a set of donor wheels, swapped them over and test drove. NO NOISE. It was even done free of charge. So i take back all those negative things i said about them (John Clark Aberdeen).

I was given various reasons such as wheel spacers, valves hitting brakes, tyres slipping on the rim, etc.

So i collect the car and guess what - noise is gone!!!

So, i am thinking maybe that the wheel nuts weren't tight enough? Maybe some amateur didnt torque them properly the last time he took the wheels off for a clean......???

Tengocity had what sounds like a similar/same problem on his M4 recently. Re-torquing the wheel bolts cured it.

Damn those amateurs

John Clark Abz can really be a hit or a miss, iv had mixed things to say about them in my dads ownership (x4 3 series and x1 5 series) and me with my x2 3 series!

I was going to suggest making sure the wheels are tight, the F80's have a issue with this kinda noise and they get "shims" to install in front and behind the brake disk and then apply a higher wheel torque of 150nm iirc.

Great result, even better the noise didn't come back after your wheels went back on

Come across this a couple of times, once on an i8 and once on a 6 series and Jack is correct. It's an individual car and wheel combination problem. Move the wheels to another car and they won't click. Or they won't click on one car and will when moved to another. BMW are aware of it with standard wheels too and have these friction shims, two piece wheel bolts and increased torque to correct it.
