According to German publication, Handelsblatt, BMW plans to unveil its first ever electric 3 Series in September, at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

BMW is reportedly aiming for a range of at least 250 miles (400km) for the electric 3 Series. It will take on Tesla's upcoming Model 3 which offers at least 215 miles of range in its most basic configuration (while variants with bigger battery would provide more than 215 miles range).

Perhaps BMW will show the Concept 3 Series early? I mean we are in the last MY of the current F30.... We only have 9-10 months until you can no longer order an F30

Good for BMW. Tesla has a substantial lead in brand, technology and design when it comes to electrics. Porsche and BMW need to catch-up fast. Doubt GM or Ford can as electric does not appeal to their customer base.

Wink

Not strange. The new X3/X4 will also be available in a 100% Electric version.

It's called... "Lead, follow or get out of the way"

I love BMW and all, but without a global fast charging infrastructure they will be far, far behind Tesla.

Ummmm...the Chevrolet Bolt is Car of the Year; beat the Tesla Model 3 to the market, and is by all accounts a phenomenal vehicle...for $35,000. I can't see a BMW 3 series playing either at this technical level OR this price point.

Presumably, it'll be based on their FSAR platform which is similar to the new CLAR platform but with floorboard accommodation of the battery pack.

One word: CCS.
Look it up.
BMW, MB, Ford and VW are innstalling EV charging station around EU, and it has allready begun, up to 350kW capacity.
Tesla have lead the race, but are soon sidelined, just look at the Volt, if Chevy can do it, so can BMW.
I didn't think we would see a 3 series EV soon, so i was thinking of buying the 400km LCI i3 this fall...

Not a fan of where the market is headed with all-electric powertrains but it's good to see BMW finally being competitive at something after a long time. If electric is the way of the future, it's better for BMW to get into the game now.
