Handsfree Bluetooth Choppy Audio Quality

I have a 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 and ever since I got it, I have had poor call/audio quality with handsfree bluetooth. I have an iPhone 5 and during most calls, the audio call will seem like the reception is very poor and the audio becomes very choppy and even the tone isn't clear (when you make a call out and you're waiting for the other end to pick up). When I took the car in for service at BMW, the technician used his iPhone 5 and the call quality was perfectly fine. My phone doesn't have any problems with other bluetooth devices or my other cars. I'm wondering if anybody else has this problems with their handsfree bluetooth and whether or not there is a solution. I'm thinking there might be an app on my phone causing it or maybe some sort of interference. I will keep trying to fix this problems but if anybody could give me some ideas, that would be great. Hopefully, this problem will be solved when I get the next iPhone in September!

Have you tried deleting the BT pairing in the Nav and recreating?

Have you tried a hard reset of your iPhone? Hold HOME and POWER button down until phone reboots.

Hard reboot of Nav? Hold down mute button on dash for 20 seconds until it reboots (not sure this works with NBT)

Update all apps in Appstore?

Do you have any other wireless devices with you? BT operates at 2.4Ghz and can easily be interfered with. Turn all other wireless devices off.

Thanks for the great advice. I'm gonna try those tomorrow after I wake up! There's a chance my Pebble watch might be interfering.

Golden rule with iDevices (of the Apple persuasion, not iDrive) is "re-pair".

I've had occasional digital dropout problems with iPhones and external A2DP headsets that would resist full reboots of both devices. Only after re-pairing was the problem solved.

My extremely speculative theory is that the iPhone BT stack's AFH algorithm (Adaptive Frequency Hopping) gets "stuck" somehow and is unable to adjust to a dynamic RF environment. Pairing/bonding restarts from scratch and allows both devices to re-analyze the environment and reselect 2.45GHz channels currently best suited for spread-spectrum.

Update your Pebble app on phone and Pebble firmware. FW 1.11 had a BT problem.

Also make sure you have the latest media software from BMW.

You can check it here:

For those with the HK option and no nav, what standard Bluetooth features are included?

Can A2DP Bluetooth steaming be supported from an iPhone 5 or does it require a hard wired setup?

Thanks.

A2DP is a Bluetooth profile, Bluetooth is a radio (2.45Ghz) based technology; it's always "over the air".

If your device supports A2DP (which the iPhone 5 does) and you have a bmw package/option that includes Enhanced Bluetooth then you can do A2DP. No wires needed.

The only option I have (cars on order) is the HK stereo. No Nav or any options that indicated "extended Bluetooth".

So I will have a cable with a USB connection to the iPhone.

Don't have this problem at all in my car - of course, I have a ruggedized flip phone, so I don't have to mess with all that "smartphone" business.

In MY13 BMW had an option 6NL which included BMW assist and Enhanced BT. That option no longer exists for MY14. For MY14 they (seem) to include BMW Assist as a STD option (code 6AC) and handsfree BT with USB Audio as STD (code 6NH).

The only place I see anything about "enhanced BT" is in the Tech Pkg (ZTP) or when adding Nav (609). Its option code 6NS (not available stand alone).

I recommend you visit your dealer and see if they have a MY14 3 series w/o Nav or Tech and check. My guess is No A2DP without Nav or Tech. I could be wrong....
