Best bang for the buck on intakes is Injen in terms of sound. Otherwise the closed box style intakes would be better performers.

the best cold air intake option would be an intercooler. no need making the already shit OEM intercooler work harder with a shit "cold" air intake.

Love my CTS Turbo intake. the noise it makes is great and no CEL or any side effects. Haven't noticed any power increase but i definitely use more gas just to hear the noises. You can very clearly hear all the intake noise when on throttle and letting off is louder than stock by a lot.

Garage List
Dinan has a nice closed cold air intake solution, just realize that at $600+, you are paying a few hundred dollars more for a pretty carbon fiber unit that just sits under the hood.
My 335ix came with the BMW factory upgrade M Sport Intake Air Box. It's also a closed cold air intake which you can purchase if you want to keep your car factory (BMW Part# 13718616013, $389). I replaced the stock Mann air filter with a aFe Pro Dry (31-10226, $83 cost) which is less restrictive and made a difference. It's a lifetime filter that can just be cleaned and reinstalled. Avoid K&N and any other oiled filter which can gunk up your $300-$400 MAF sensor with oil.
DM me if you are interested in the BMW Factory M Sport Intake Air Box with aFe filter since I could upgrade to the Dinan. What can I say, I like looking at pretty carbon fiber whenever I change my oil.

This^. The term should really be shifted to "high-flow intake" rather than cold-air.. it would clear up some bad information for a lot of people.

This option from Arma Speed definitely adds a lot of bling to your engine bay, and it's a true cold air intake. Plus, who doesn't love carbon?

That's not a true cold air intake. If that was the case then you could say the stock intake is a cold air intake. There is no true cold air intake for the N55 just high flow intakes. A true cold air intake has very long tubing not stock like as in your pics, it sits either directly behind the grill or somewhere Below the headlight and the filter element is not covered by a box just like stock.

Opinion.

Whether the filter is in the grill or not doesn't determine its "true cold air" nature.

The stock box routes air directly from the front grill, in a closed box, so it is indeed a cold air intake. It would no longer be categorized as "cold air" if the filter wass inside the engine bay AND an open element, but it isn't. Dinan, awe, and Arma are cold air as well since they are closed box and route air from the grill like the stock box. The length of piping has no relevance.

AFE replacement panel filter in the OEM box is the best intake option from my limited research.

As mentioned for "colder air" getting a upgraded intercooler would be one option.

You could have the most craziest expensive "cold" air intake available. Once that air gets compressed by the turbo whatever you've gained over the factory box all goes out the window.

A cold air intake would be breathing air from the "coldest" area possible. Whether it be low and away from the engine or in front of it with a ram air affect. That being said, the name of the game is not only colder air but more flow.

Airflow is usually not the issue, surface area is. There is a calculation used to determine proper surface area compared with engine size and compressor output.

Today's intakes from factory are just as good as the after market intakes. I would say if going to show car go for it.But if your not just a drop in KN would be the more economicle way.
