How do I get this off my wheels?
Hello All,
Please see attached pics. I'm having trouble getting this staining/baked on brake dust (not sure what it is actually) off of my wheels. The car is new to me (bought it in January). I've been keeping it clean since I've owned it, but it could have been staining from not being cleaned regularly by the lessee that had it for the first three years of its life. It's not normal brake dust, this is something tougher. I've tried Chemical Guys Diablo wheel cleaner as well as their Decon iron remover and neither seem to touch it. Everything else comes off the wheels but not this stuff. Any tips would be appreciated! |

You could try CarPro Iron X (just don't let it dry on the wheels and keep it away from the brake calipers & wheel weights). If that doesn't work, try a polish and/or compound on them. Meguiar's Ultimate Polish or Meguiar's Ultimate Compound works good and can be purchased from your local auto parts stores. Good luck.

Unfortunately baked on brake dust like that is pretty much impsossible to get off.... Happened to my NSX after a day at the track to my white Enkei rpf1's.
You could try Purple Power, that stuff did wonders on my silver is250 wheels, but doubt anything will get baked in brake dust off a wheel. Good luck, let us know how it goes. |

Thanks Guys, how different are the products that have been mentioned (IronX, Sonax, Purple Power) from Chemical Guys Decon? If its basically the same I don't have a lot of hope of it working.
Not looking forward to having to compound around the spokes |

Walmart carries it if you want to Try it out today instead of waiting for Amazon Don't think it will take off that baked on brake dust though, but it's still great stuff to have around the house. |

That looks like lacquer damage to me. After using an acidic cleaner the lacquer is stripped off and leaves the paint compromised to brake dust as the lacquer is thinned or missing. Or it has not been protected after a wash with a wheel seal. You could try giving it a good polish.
Something like this might improve the appearance: https://www.merproducts.com/product/...timate-polish/ |

Take a Q Tip soaked in paint thinner and hold it on the spot for about 60 seconds. Repeat this process a few times until you can feel with your finger nail the spot soften. Wet a soft cloth with hot water. Rub gently until it lifts off. Will not harm finish of wheel surface. Good luck. |

I had the same thing and used some wet 4000 grit sand paper to get it off. followed by a quick compound and polish and it's good to go.

I spent about 4 hours working on my wheels today and I'm happy with the results. That stuff is stubborn but finally it came off. Clay bar was the hero of the story, although I did use a little acetone here and there because in some cases it still wouldn't budge. WD-40, dawn, purple power wasn't doing a thing (as expected). Glad I didn't have to end up sanding/compounding/polishing because that would have been a pain in all the tight spots.
They're clean, sealed and protected now! |
