Correct, but N55 engines need it a lot less frequently than N54 engines, so there's some improvement going in.

I still run a bottle of techron every 5k in my B58 since I started with my N54. I wouldn't preemptively get the walnut blast since your service advisor is going to try and sell it at some point and you have no way of verifying it's necessity unless your butt dyno magic.

I haven't seen any N58 walnut before and after pics so not sure how big of an issue on the B58 it is. On N54 it is pretty much mandatory maintenance every 60-80K Mike |

your best preventive maintenance is to never use cheap gas, def nothing less than premium gas (pref. 93)....the main reason for issues with build up and dirt inside your engine comes from lower tier gas which contains little to none detergents, I can assure you if you have always used premium your engine is a lot cleaner that you might think since its been cleaning itself since day one of use

Maybe if you are running a tune w/ high PSI..
I'm still waiting for a pic of a B58 oil catch can filled with oil until I see one or hear about lots more people needing walnut blasting I will assume its not needed in B58 |

Since fuel never touches the valves on the back side, fuel quality doesn't matter as far as how dirty your valves get. This also goes for any additives you may put in your tank like techron. There are other benefits to using good quality fuel, as well as additives, but keeping your intake valves clean on a direct injected car is not one of them. |

My opinion is that it seems like something you need to do once, maybe at 100k miles or something. He also mentioned that our PCV system seams to do a really good job. |

One way to avoid valves from getting gummed up installing a catch can will help significantly.

I have a catch can and it's always empty. I have seen a drop or two come out. I would only run a catch can if I have a built engine or running big boost.

thanks for the tag. yes, B58s don't seem to have a lot of blowby. That's why your catch cans are almost always dry. it's a good thing. it means that your engine is healthy and well designed with tight clearances.
that might change as more get to higher mileage but i have yet to see any with gummed up valves like older engines. the one i referred to specifically on my stream was trevor (owner of bimmerboi performance) and he replaced his intake manifold around 60-80k miles i believe. he posted pics of his valves showing that they were basically spotless. |
