SAE J1169 Standard 2007 has been canceled. There is no standard on how to measure excessive sound anymore.

You can blame the land of fruits and nuts liberals for running the state into the ground for car guys and everyone else for that matter, unless of course you're an illegal immigrant or a drug addicted bum living on the street.

My new streetbike came with a dealer installed valved after market exhaust. I don't remember signing a waiver for it, it's quiet until you rap the throttle and that mechanical valve opens (controlled by exhaust flow, not vacuum line) maybe I need to start a business retrofitting modified exhausts with valves and baffles..

Or you can blame the people with totally unreasonable and excessive mods and their amazing contributions to society known as takeovers, sideshows, etc.

Yes the baby is getting thrown out with the bathwater on this one but I don't blame the average California citizen for this one.

Go to Instagram and search up a user named "freshhkiicks", that's where all this shit originated from. 180k followers and the younger kids who are doing this are all in 350/370z, G37, G35, mustangs, and tuner cars out there.

1.) Meters have to be certified and calibrated, like radar guns.
Just buying one and using to measure your exhaust is unreliable unless it's independently certified. Police know this as well as lawyers.
2.) Backround noise has to be determined independently to correctly determine the meter's reading. I've had OSHA stop jackhammer work on the highway shoulder for excess noise only to finally determine that the background noise of cars and trucks were the source of the high readings.

Of course, if you're referring to my post it is just so I have a general idea of sound output.

No, not referring to anyone in particular. Just some input for the conversation. Good lawyers can get tickets dismissed for technical reasons.

The problem with the law as written is it gives the police discretion so a meter is really no longer needed and, theoretically, using a meter could also be at their discretion. After all, can you get a ticket without them utilizing a meter now? Suppose the policeman thinks your too loud but doesn't have a meter with him?

Laws like these are problematic.

That's the issue, so far from videos I have seen is that cops aren't/don't have to use a sound meter and are just writing tickets arbitrarily for an exhaust that is too loud in their opinion. It is then on you to go to a smog ref and PROVE YOUR INNOCENCE. This makes absolutely no sense, especially taking into fact that as pointed out above they cancelled the standard that they had for noise testing.

I found that standard J1492 replaced the above mentioned standard.. it seems very similar.. still 19" away from the tail pipe test.. but i'm sure no officer will be conducting actual test when they pull you over and rather just refer you to BAR office.. if i can just pay the fine and not bother going to BAR then great, i'll just pay and be done with it..

Me either. It's quite obnoxious how people have felt it's okay to make everyone else go deaf so that they can try and convince others how awesome they are with a super loud exhaust. This goes for Harleys too. I can appreciate a piece of machinery like any other red blooded car enthusiast, but enough is enough. There is no admiration gained from having straight pipes. Any fool can do it, so what value does it bring?

I used to live in a condo on a narrow SF street that saw lots of traffic since it was one of the main arteries for the bay bridge. Without fail, at least twice a night, I'd wake up to car alarms set off by someone's exhaust. 9 times out of 10 it was a 370Z, Charger, etc. or Harley. My M4 with MPE (valves forced open) on the same street never did that.

Given the vast majority of the mods are on vehicles owned by males I just figure they are compensating for manhood inadequacies.

If Texas is slowly turning into California, Mexico doesn't sound bad anymore lol.

Anyone know if this new law will effect the attendance at Bimmerfest 2019?

But the wording of the new law is terrible.

- subjective as to what's considered noisy
- $1k "non correctable" fine... which I interpret as you pay $1k regardless (as to before it was correctable)...

Of course SEMA would put that statement out to keep companies in their association in business.

Just last night while in my e90 M3 with no other engine mod but the eismann Race... CHP was in the opposite lane starring me down as if they where trying to figure out if they want to pull me over... luckily traffic flow made it difficult for them to U turn.

I haven't read the whole thing, but what sticks out is the word "CERTAIN" and not "ALL".

95dB limit measured at what distance from the car? Right at the tips or 100 ft away?

I watch the videos for the cars, but dealing with the self promotion nonsense is tough to take.

What I love are videos after videos of reckless driving by some of these folks on Youtube, endangering everyone's lives on the road with their asinine behavior. Then, when they get pulled over by a cop for not having a front license plate or something they give an attitude and scream "TARGETED POLICE INTIMIDATION" etc.

I still don't understand how they can post all of this evidence on YT of their antics and not be taken to task for it.

I wonder if this applies to out of state visitors as well. How can they expect the visitors to know of this?
