Management Courses

We have recently went through a bunch of management training courses at work.

Sort of came about from a rant with people not having a clue.

One of the recent ones was Managing Millenials in the Workplace, they can be quite a challenge and do tend to cry to HR a fair bit.

The vote is still out on Gen Z

Are you a Millenial and does your employer treat you as the special person you are ?

Do you have to manage these special people?

Graduate schemes are the bane here - entitled tossers who think they are owed a living.

I'll be fair and say some of them are good and develop into normal human beings but others are utter shite.

Management training? How enlightened... we still live in the world where good doers get promoted to management without any training at all or we buy them in and assume they must be good as they came from outside...

Our CFO is a millennial - can't make a decision to save his fucking life. Technically very competent but shit at people management. So he has a team with no morale and everything is blocked up waiting for him. As you can tell I am not a fan...

I have a few in my teams who would be regarded as millenials, and to be honest they're all brilliant. Hardworking, open minded, ambitious, lateral thinkers, willing to listen and learn.

Not sure I can say if that's typical, but then we do pick and choose pretty carefully.

I try to consider everyone as individuals though, young and old, and allow their behaviour to show me what they're about, rather than pre-judge and make sweeping generalisations.

Youngsters are told at school that if they get good results and a degree they can do anything they want

Shows like X Factor imply that instant success is not just possible but normal

Everyone believes they're really talented and are entitled to a good living

Etc etc etc

Maybe I'm just an old git but I worked hard to learn some practical skills over many years gradually working my way up. I think the belief that this isnt necessary more has a lot to do with it.

We’ve about 12 in our team, all so far so good. Add a lot of value, question why we do things as we do and challenge us when they can. Keeps us oldies on our toes and I hope keeps us learning, which was one of the main drivers for taking them on.

I’ve worked with some of the other teams grads/mills and they are fucking useless. Maybe that’s harsh but in the few engagements we’ve had with them, they’ve either gone to great pains to explain how stupid we are even when we’ve explained the basic laws of physics or they are all workshy fops.

They’ve probably got it right, less hours, nothing to taxing or stressful, moan like fuck if we don’t make them feel special enough.

Classic timing this thread, I've just been added to the list for a one day course next month. It actually sounds more useful than others I've been on recently, but the management sch-peel in bold below made me raise an eyebrow...

Workshop Objective: Utilizing intention as a key tool to keep presentations/meetings on track and on time, to influence key stakeholders, and empower a team to take action
Learning Outcome: To navigate vertically and horizontally within XXX to influence and gain support from senior leaders. To make an engaging and strong first impression in order to instantly establish credibility and confidence as a leader.

I did one last year.

12 managers in one room (I use the word manager very loosely).

The objective was to look at improving productivity and make savings.

Everyone had a go with a plan.

I stood up for my bit, read out 7 names and asked them to wait outside.

I then told the remainder that they were now responsible for the area of the 7.

I then dismissed the 'Magnificent Seven'

Sorted
No power point, no rambling through word docs, took about 5 mins tops.

We then had an extended coffee break.

Spoken like a true Millennial. I always suspected you were younger than you look.

I wish, but I'm Generation X I'll have you know. All the best films are from the 80s...
