Dallas Cop
This news baffled me from the moment I first heard about it.
There are so many hows and whys. How the hell did she get confused into thinking she was in her own house, how did she get away with not being arrested for three days after the shooting and why is she being charged with manslaughter, not murder? Thoughts and comments below! https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/09/u....co/UexU2oKJEy

From reading the article it appears the victims apartment was above her apartment.
Mr. Merritt, the lawyer, said that that the officer and Mr. Jean did not know each other but that she lived in a unit below Mr. Jean, who had received noise complaints from a downstairs neighbor. He said the apartment complex uses electronic keys, which blink red when used incorrectly. Officer Guyger’s key was found in the doorway of Mr. Jean’s apartment, he said. At first I assumed side by side apartments, however that makes it even worse as how did she mix that up. That and not arrested straightaway shows how fucked up it is over in the States. As to the manslaughter / murder bit, I would have assumed she would be arrested for the shooting, then later charged with murder / manslaughter once investigation had taken place. This just seems to say the police believe her story, end of! |

It's absolutely mental!
I'm sure if she's found guilty she will be eaten alive by the prisoners!

So let me understand this:
She had complained previously and officially about noise from her above neighbor. She accidentally shot her neighbor. She is a cop and she is getting what seems to be preferential treatment. Doesn't sound at all fishy. |

I can see how she could have genuinely gone to the wrong apartment, however, when the average person will realise that something is wrong when they insert a key card into an electronic lock and the door won't open.
Did the occupant of the apartment open the door when he heard the lock being tampered with ? Was she then even more confused when 'her' apartment door was opened by an intruder ? Flip side : she knew the guy because she'd complained about his noise in the past; she gets home tired, hears more noise, and loses it; knocks on the door; shoots the guy dead; inserts her key into his lock to fake her confusion. The difference between manslaughter and murder, of course, is proving that it was a premeditated act. As always in the States : shoot first, think second.

Do they not have door numbers on these apartments in the US? Would of thought that would have been a big clue?
If she's that dump she should not wear the uniform |

It's not really a guide to follow, just being dumb in the US is not a restriction on what public office you hold. Actually suprised Trump has not tweeted on this and awarded the police officer a medal etc. |

As said, baffling, truly baffling. What's the odds on her ending up in pokey, slim to fuck all.
How could even the most placid of people not read this and feel aggrieved. Not to mention the straight cops trying their best to protect and serve, as they say.

I’ve only ever gone to the wrong house when I’m seriously pissed.
American justice will prevail no doubt.

Your post came over as being positioned in a humorous way to me too to be honest. Don’t forget you’re posting in a UK forum with the inherent cultural and humour differences. Your post could be read as being ironic and that’s quite a comedic thing here.

In a way it's all about economy of effort. Why spend all day on patrol, when you have a genuine living and breathing target as a neighbour. |

I obviously failed at my attempt to show how outrageous the excuses that were being made to try and cover up yet another black man killed by an officer of the law in America. I apologize for any perception I was making light of the situation.
What seems like a good idea at the time, sometimes is not.
