Dash cam , where to buy and have fitted

Hi all ,

Hope everyone has survived lock down 2 .

I am looking to fit front and rear dash cams to my 2018 F31.
Anyone have any recommendations of both cams and places that supply / fit , I do not know enough about car electrics to do it myself.
I am based in Buck's but willing to travel.

All reply's gratefully revived

Everyone is going to have a different opinion on this. I personally like the design/quality of BlackVue cameras, and have the dr900s 2ch fitted front & rear on my F31. Thinkware are also well regarded and good quality.

You can get cheaper options, but I personally feel the picture quality isn't as good as the brands mentioned above, although plenty of people will argue that point.

If you want it to record when parked, you'll need some sort of additional power supply, or at the very least a device that turns the camera off when it detects the car battery voltage drop below a certain threshold. Both options work fine, but you need to do enough mileage to charge either the additional or main car battery between recording sessions.

I'm afraid I can't recommend anyone to fit. I did it myself on my car. Go with a recommendation though, and probably avoid the likes of Halfords. Make sure the wiring is routed clear of any airbags. This generally means routing the rear camera wires at floor level, rather than over the top of the doors.

Rear cameras on the F31 have been known to cause DAB radio interference. This seems to be worse if you mount directly on the rear glass screen. Mine is mounted on the rear of the headlining and doesn't cause problems.

Thanks for the prompt reply, all the points you raise are valid , especially about cable routes , that's why I am looking for someone who knows what they are doing , fit, and yes Halfords are not on my list.

In fairness they’re not that difficult not fit.

Most of the wiring can be pushed relatively behind trim

I’d also go for either the BlackVue or the Thinkware. Got both one in a each car.

There are pros and cons on each. The BlackVue uses a coaxial cable the end of which can be delicate and I had to use a power magic to allow parked re riding which runs continuously.

The Thinkware has few more features which are gps based , is gentler on the battery but records when parked via motion activation and I’m not sure if it would miss a parked incident.

Had my BlackVue professionally fitted by one of their(independent) fitters. If I recall right the option for fitting was on their website when purchasing.

Have a look on the RAC website. They supply several makes. And will also fit. Their prices are online & transparent.
