Air filter change?
Hey everybody, I'm getting ready to change my oil and do an air filter change as well. I ordered a K&N drop in so I can just clean it instead of ordering a new filter every time I need one. I do have one question though: What's the gray pad that's on the bottom of the stock air filter? I haven't seen this on any of my other cars. I can post a picture if you'd like. Should I clean this/put this in with the new air filter or should the K&N come with one or do I not need it at all? Thanks guys.

Ehh, K&N lets in too much dust. Look through the filter into sunlight, and you will see how inconsistent the filter media is.
Your turbo blades will appreciate not being sandblasted. Stock paper filters are cheap and effective. The gray pad is an additional filter media.

Lol well the k&n is already in, I'm in Florida and with higher humidities there isn't really any dust in the air. I'll take my chances. I've always had good luck with k&n filters and had a bsr in my Saab that was wonderful.

That looks like an extra piece of filter media of sorts?
Cant be good for airflow. You'll be fine with the K&N as long as you dont go off roading. I just had a Blackstone analysis done while running a K&N filter and passed with flying colors. I posted the results on this forum if you care to see them. |

The extra filter material looks just like a home ac filter you can cut to fit. Not sure why everyone is ASSuming it will impede air flow. I don't don't think it will. As a test you can place it over your mouth and breath. I'm sure you will not suffocate. The previous owner must have added this. I've never seen one on a filter before.

It won't impede flow when it's all fresh and new.
Then again, even if you do improve air capacity, it wouldn't make a difference at all in a diesel. The diesel ecu will not add additional fuel (not on fixed afr) when there is more air, so no additional power is to be gained.
