This was the second thing to fail on me, after my charge pipe. Thankfully also the last! The darned hose also broke around the connecting elbow there. Much like everyone else here it broke on me within the 4X,XXX miles area.Ran me about $80 at the dealership for a new hose plus a big bottle of coolant.

I must have snapped mine when installing a new intake. Was a little ticked at the time but I guess it is better than it failing while driving. Cost me $50 in parts plus a drive 40 miles away in a snowstorm since the closer BMW dealership was out of the part. Worst part was having to drive the wife's minivan to get it.

That would suck.

Pretty much every plastic part under the hood is pretty brittle. My local BMW shop said the turbos just cook/heat cycle everything.

On a related note, I'm at 57k miles and just replaced my charge pipe. The pipe was fine but the PVC-style hoses that plug on/off just disintegrated when trying to remove them. It's a $90 part and none of the dealers stock it, so it's a solid week from order to getting it in hand.

part number for the hose (f series n55 not e series) 11127599753

Guys, if i just swap this hose for new one, i dont have to worry about bleeding the system after? Is there usually some coolant in the hose or is it empty when not running? Thank you

if you are just replacing it as a preventative measure, you should not have to bleed the system. I would let someone else chime in with 100% confirmation because I'm 90% sure..

Was making some updates to my 80k mile N55 and was preparing to remove the bumper and barely touched the coolant line and it snapped right off. Then tried to gently remove the other side and it crumbled in my hand. Once I got the replacement it was super easy to install. If you are higher mileage this is a must do.

Excellent PSA. Mine broke right around the time you posted this, but on the other end at the expansion tank. It just so happened to break right after I spent 30 min trying to teach the girlfriend stick (a lot of stalls and jerky starts), so I suspect that may have been the reason the already brittle hose finally broke off. Who knows.

I was at around 56k miles (2013 335i).

Nice to see this is a common issue for these cars once they hit a certain mileage. Mine just broke this evening when checking the seal on the turbo outlet pipe for a boost leak. Leaned my arm on the end that connects to the coolant reservoir and it just snapped. Didn't even put that much pressure on it. Thankfully the car had been sitting for a few hours with the hood open so the engine was quite cool when it happened. Guess I know what I'm doing in the morning.

I'm at about 73k miles (2015 335I)

You don't need to bleed the system is replaced as preventative maintenance. I replaced mine as a precaution, didn't bleed and had no issues.

Just changed mine over weekend as a preventative measure. Didn't notice anything wrong with my current one, but after replacing I did notice what looked like some hairline cracking near the underside of the fitting....so I'm glad that I did. I am at 58k on my 2014. Easy replacement, took less than 5 min. No bleed necessary when I did it.

Add me to this list. Dealer replaced my thermostat that was stuck open under warranty the other week - and I noticed they also replaced this reservoir coolant hose, so that's good news as I'm at 58k.

What MeesyGarage BMW said....great cinematography.

Of course you have to bleed the coolant system after replacing the hose, since the cracked hose let air into the system. When you replace the hose more air gets in. Doesn't matter if the coolant reservoir has fluid in it.

Coolant System bleed procedure is automated and simple. If the coolant level goes down after the bleed and you have too top off the coolant in the reservoir, you have to bleed it again.

Best price on the hose is at Pelican Parts and BMW Parts Pros. FCP will replace it free every time it breaks again with a lifetime warranty. Get a gallon of BMW Blue coolant and distilled water. I would by 2 hoses. Install one and keep the second for the future.

The hose goes under the front grommet for your air intake. Every time you or a mechanic touches the air intake warn them about this brittle hose. Check it for a break or leak when you are done.

You know this hose is cracked, when there is steam coming from the driver's side front of your hood or kidney grilles. You will see liquid spray on the top of the engine near the driver's side hood latch. There will be no leaks under the engine near the radiator. A trail of liquid flowing on the ground behind the car is common. You might not get a low coolant or overheating warning at first, unless you are on the highway doing the speed limit.

Cheers

I replaced mine today on a 2014 335i with 30k miles, nearly all long highway trips. Nothing was wrong with the old one I took off and I couldn’t even break it after trying multiple times so I suspect high mileage is the main issue. There is no need to flush the coolant system if yours isn’t cracked because it’s a return line and won’t get flushed with that flush procedure listed above. If you look at the side that goes into the coolant reservoir, it goes in at a level above the Max fill level, meaning even if you flushed it manually with coolant, one end is exposed to air above the max fill level and would empty itself out regardless. Only reason to flush is if you let air into the system with a broken hose.

Just happened to me with 95k miles on the car. Perhaps this could be stickied somewhere for some "standard" maintenance when buying a used F30.
