B58 Engine Versions?
Hopefully this is the right place to ask
I have a 2019 440 with a B58 engine. Im curious to know what the differences are with the internals of the B58 engine in the 440 vs the one used in the Toyota Supra and the One being used in the BMW Z4? |

That article has some good info on the Z4/M340i vs the Supra I haven't seen yet, but there is more than one US version of the B58 between all the 40i models kicking around right?
I have the X3 M40i and have been curious about this myself. I watched this video last week which breaks down the engine number convention in good detail, but it only mentions the Z4, Supra and X5. The Z4 M40i is rated at 382hp where my M40i is rated at 355hp; the X5 40i has even less output. According to the linked video there are six different performance classes for the B58. I had been assuming the differences were all in tuning, but after reading about the Supra having hardware differences I'm not so sure all the BMWs run the same hardware in the US. Any more info on the topic would much appreciated |

There have been six variances since MY 2016:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_B58 No changes in hardware occurred until MY 2019 ("M" to "O" variant.....from Wards Auto): "But now in the ’19 X5 xDrive40i, the B58 gets a new cooling system, head, timing chain, oil pump and a forged crankshaft. The block and air induction system have been modified, and the new high-pressure direct-injection system now is rated at 350 bar (5,075 psi), up from 250 (3,625 psi)." First five were all the same hardware, with power differences from tuning.

M and O are the power class, and translate as middle and upper. The scale from lowest to highest is KUMOTS. The difference is primarily tuning, very little to do with the hardware. 0 was the initial hardware, 1 is TÜ1. |

There are a couple of versions of the turbo. The big change was for the TU where the exhaust headers are redesigned for better flow. The turbo impeller is also lighter and so will spool faster. These give you an idea of where some of the bottlenecks were in the original B58.

B58B30M1 B58B30O1 The O1 is in M340i. Supra has M1 among, with BMW models like X5 (G05) and X7. M1 has partially cylinder head integrated exhaust manifold, while O1 has similar to base B58 exhaust manifold. See the PDF document for more details. The lower compression ratio of O1 allows more boost, without knock... I tend to think we will see quite nice tunes for O1 especially given that there seems to be more fueling available in both TÜ's. As of now there is no F-series car with the new TÜ engine. However it is going to be interesting to see if M240i is going to get one next spring... Will be very tempting car if that happens. |

The 3 series started a new generation in 2020, so there is no 2020 340i. Only the G20 M340i, and that does have the new engine. |

2021 Zupra will get the 382 hp version! I get this happens routinely, but 2019 owners are not going to be happy!
https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a3...ign=nl19429392 For now, the ultimate B58 version is the S58! https://jalopnik.com/bmws-new-500-hp...sti-1832589427 Rumor has it the M2C DCT will be replaced with the ZF 8-speed (I'll still take the 6M). I really hope the M2C will also get the S58! Last edited by damascus; 02-16-2020 at 09:20 AM.. |
