Is your 340i operating without vibration at idle?

Hy Guys,

I recently purchased a 2017 BMW 340i with manual transmission and 60.000km. I love the car more and more every time. However, when i stop for example at the red traffic light and i live my hand on the transmission i feel vibration there. I can see even with eyes too. Well I know it is normal for a four cylinder diesel car, but is not a 6 cylinder petrol should be butter smooth?

99% of the time mine is smooth as silk however from time to time I do feel some vibration. Seems to be correlated to driving style. When I hammer on it for a bit, it seems to vibrate more. No clue why.

Is your automatic or manual? Because elsewhere for example on steering wheel i do not feel vibration, while a diesel shakes there too.

Maybe automatic connects different to the engine than the manual transmission, so I will wait a manual’s guy input too.

6MT guy. I get the occasional shake or vibration. It's smooth most of the time, I don't really see an issue. It's nothing that alarms me and did it on stock plugs as well. NGK 94201 gapped to 0.022"

Manual will vibrate. The car idles smooth but there will always be vibration, and it is a direct linkage to the engine/transmission. It shouldn't be excessive, but you'll feel it if you put your hand on the shifter.

I just keep Auto Start/Stop on. Perfectly silent at every red light.

Thank you for the comments. Good to know others have this vibration too. This way the car impress me all the way, expect with fuel consumption. But I used to be diesel guy... However I think if the 6th gear would have been little longer, it would eat less. At 180km/h I have 4000RPM, which I think little high.

They deliberately made it worse in manual. We have a shorter top gear and shorter final drive in the differential. That's why the auto gets 2+mpg higher than us. Great for passing power, but I agree it revs too high on the highway.

Well that is sad. if there is one thing, this what i would like to mod on my car. Most of the times I’m in the 6th gear, because engine can handle that nicely from 60km/h. I would like to use more often the clutch and transmission.

I’ve said from the get-go that an engine with this much torque doesn’t need the low gearing, especially 5th and 6th.

IMO 4th could be 1:1, 5th a mild OD and 6th a highway gear.

That's how it's always been for me until I got to the BMW. And our 4th gear is ridiculous, it pulls to 140mph. I think it's a combination of gearing and diff final drive that makes it an awkward setup.

I'd rather not put more wear and tear on the starter. I know we have a beefy one, but still.

I don’t get it, if it makes 140mph (225km/h) in forth gear (i did not try), than the gears are actually not too short.

Yes, my auto-stop is turned off by bimmer code and also seat belt alarm and ASD. I like to hear just the smooth soft 6 cylinder noise, instead from speaker something similar.

Ohh, and I did not notice exhaust burble yet. Anybody has idea on that? I did put it into sport mod and while I was driving, i pushed the clutch in and roared the engine and i did not get burble. Or how is that suppose to work?

Turning off ASD turns off burbles too.

Like I said i think it's a combination of the 2. The final drive can be way higher. You have mustangs and camaros with way more power running 4+ F/D, but we're stuck with 3.23. Although it's not the worst thing in the world if you don't want to jut roast your tires.
