I can't believe this is still a thing in 2022, but here I am, having dug this thread up, because I too have the phantom rear reading lights issue on my 2017 340i

thenagaraja don't suppose you still have the bill from that work and can work out what the part number is do you? I realise it's a few years ago now 😬

TIA

I am still intrigued as to what was/is causing it... I always figured it was some sort of a glitch in the code in the comms system… suspect i wrote a better explanation at the time…

Good luck…

I think luck is what's required Dave! 😬

Had it today too. Sigh. Tried driving for a while without ACC on and it didn't come on for at least half hour. Put the ACC on, nothing for a while. Then after about an hour sure enough the dog started reading in the back.

It's infuriating!

I'm up for one of the earlier hypotheses.. "Ghost Cars"...

Hope you get things sorted.. I had mine nearly three years and I just got kind of used to it in the end... Was still doing it occasionally when I sold it..

18 pages and 8 years later, and I have finally found the solution to this problem!

It is the light units themselves. I replaced mine this week, and noticed a sub number of the part was incremented. I fitted them a couple of days ago, and did five hours of driving yesterday. Not once did the reading lights magically come on on their own 🤣

To claim a final solution, after 18 pages and 8 years, you will have to declare the new part number, else we won't believe you.
