Angry (Rotational) Noise at 50-60... Very Strange

Hey all,

First post here, and I wish it were under better circumstances. I own a 2013 BMW 335i Xdrive Sedan (Mineral Gray ) and have been having some issues since I hit a pothole. I have owned the vehicle for less than 2 months, CPO with 36,xxx. After hitting this large pothole at 35-38 mph (Thanks Boston)

I noticed a noise at around 50-60 mph. It sounds like a droning or rotational noise, and can be felt from under the pedal (very slightly). I took it to the dealership, and went through all the normal procedures. It is currently there for its FOURTH VISIT since this issue has popped up. So far, I have had:

-Balance and Alignment Done
-Front wheel replaced due to visible bends, no correction felt. Same noise still present
-Exhaust clamp
-TRANSFER CASE... I am told that this is a larger repair typically done when other options have been exhausted (alignment, balance, wheel)

I just picked it up from the the transfer case replacement job and am still feeling the same noise. My best attempt to discribe it would be a rotational noise that occurs over 50 mph, and very visibly at 60 mph, and is reminiscent of what you would imagine if something were loose. It feels like everytime *something* rotates, it is caught by something and produces a noise. The noise is present above 50-60 at coast as well as under acceleration, increasing with speed.

I am open to this being something simple and silly that was overlooked. (loose nut?) After all, I was charged $600 for a balance and alignment where the guy WALKED AWAY FROM THE CAR and failed to see the VISIBLE bend in the rim.

Please, any help is appreciated.

Thanks!!

I have nothing to offer here but to say good luck and hope you can solve it. This would drive me absolutely insane. I am completely ocd about vibrations and not being able to source it would make me want to drive my car off a cliff.

Could it be tire noise?

My vote is for a wheel bearing or a tire issue. Tires on the wife's x3 were cupping and resonated in the cabin very loudly during certain speeds. It sounded like a bad wheel bearing on my beater Honda I had a couple years ago.

Make sure you're taking your car to a very reputable shop. Just cuz they said they did it doesn't mean its done right. My SA advised that the tires were cupping before they became noisy and im OCD so I know i would have heard it. Sure enough a couple weeks later they started making noise. You might want to make a request to have your wheels\tires balanced using a road force balancer. Not all shops spend the money on the fancy balancing equipment. If that doesn't work, have the tires checked for uniformity by a specialist in higher end vehicles. They should be able to drive\inspect and let you know if its a tire issue or a wheel bearing issue. Aside from that i don't know what to suggest. Obviously its gotta be something that rotates as long as the vehicle is moving. If you eliminate tires, wheels, wheel bearings what are you left with? Driveshaft, rear diff, internal tranny parts? Just throwing out ideas, idk where to go from there, but a reputable shop would!

You may not be interested in diagnosing your own vehicle or buying tools, but I will share the links so you can see how a equipped shop and trained technician would find the problem. The Master Tech or Shop Foreman at the dealership should have this training and equipment available for diagnosis.

Watch this 5 min video:

You can see from the above video the right tool will zero in on the cause.
There are also profession level NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) tools that BMW dealers have that can locate the problem. Here is a video showing the current Professional level method.

You need a shop that is interested in diagnosing the problem rather than just "trying this and that" until they get lucky and "throwing parts at the problem".

Your description sounds like a tire or wheel bearing problem, but without a test drive I'm just guessing.

Was the tire on the damaged rim replaced with a new tire?
Did the shop use a road force wheel balancer to see if there is a defect in the old tire?
Did you discuss the problem with the BMW Shop Foreman?

You might also be able to find an independent BMW shop that has a NVH tester (vibration analyzer and software).

Two things:

Wheel bearing, or cupped tire.

Did they replace the tire on that bent rim?

Test for a cupped tire before you replace your wheel bearings. First, drop your tire pressure down and see if the sound is affected. Also try maxing out your pressure and testing for that noise again. The change in air pressure changes your contact patch to the road and is one way to test for cupping. Since the patch is changing, if your tires are cupped, the sound they make will change as well, do the the nature of unevenness of a cupped tire. If the noise is unchanged then it's most likely not your tires, since the evenness of a normal un-cupped tire will not change the sound. Look into the wheel bearings.

Keep in mind, I'm no expert, I just like to problem solve. Keep us up to date on your problem!

Odd noise/feeling

Hi everyone! I'm a new BMW owner (3 weeks in) and I bought my car from an import dealer in PA. I drove it home, everything felt fine, and then about a week ago I was coasting through a 30 mph zone and as my car dropped from 40 to 30 I heard a noise, cyclical in pattern that sped up/slowed with the tires, although I don't hear it when accelerating and I don't hear it above 35 mph. It reminded me of when my wheel bearing on my Camry needed to be replaced, but I don't feel anything or hear anything when rounding curves. I also hear a lot of tire noise in the cabin, but the roads around here are littered with small cracks and bumps and most of the noise goes away when I do find the rare smooth spot. I asked the dealer where I got it and the guy said cupped tires, but I looked at them all and they all appear to be just fine. Can anyone offer thoughts/suggestions before I start pouring money into guessing games?

It was wheel bearing for me

I had almost exact same symptoms. Droning and rotational noise that was loud enough to hear at 45 mph+.
Bearing gone bad, wheel bearing and front hub assembly replaced by non dealer BMW shop for $420 (2015 F30 335i)
