N20 Timing Chain

So looking at the potential timing chain settlement for the n20 engine, it appears that there will be at least some out of pocket related to the repair. I wanted to see of there was any interest in putting together a thread of potential additional repairs that could be completed without significant increases to labor cost. Looking at the FCP Euro video for replacing the timing chain guides, they removed both the oil pan and the valve cover. If so, it seems that at least the gaskets for those items could be replaced at that time. Are there any other items that could/should be replaced as part of some sort of preventative maintenance?

The oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket are part of the FCP timing chain kit.

I just purchased it from them this morning. The only other items I see that can be replaced and would not really add to the labor cost would be engine/transmission mounts.

I added this washer since it was not part of the kit and it's an item that is removed during the install.

Nice find. So are you planning to tackle this job yourself? Do you have a lift?

Hell to the no. Having a shop do it. I've done many DIY's from suspension, engine, electrical jobs but for this I don't have a lift to do the under engine work and I don't have the special tools.

They quoted me 1,600. I might get walnut blasting done at the same time while it's there

Nice, that is a good number for sure. Walnut blasting sounds nice. If you do, would love to get your thoughts on the condition inside and mileage. Might be helpful for others to consider it as well.

Will do. Car will have between 95-100k miles when I get it done. I saw a pic of an N20 with 25k miles and you could already see carbon deposits on the intake/valve stems. I can't image what it looks like at 100k.

Haha yea same I am 99k and I never really thought to do it. Now I am like well since chunks of the engine are coming off for this job, lets make the dollars stretch as far as possible.

I was thinking about this one. I did not see a pump with the FCP Euro kit. I think it makes sense if we are already in that area to replace it. Do you have access to the part number they used?

Sure thing. Lehigh Valley Motors. They opened up early in the year but it looks like they have a lot of BMWs going there. I did have a convo with one of the guys and he's done the chain numerous times. He even sent some pics of the broken guides.

Just did the walnut blast on my car. 2015 N26 with 68k about. There was really not much carbon on the valves. For what it's worth.

That looks fine actually, another 60k miles and then you might benefit from doing a blasting.

I carried out a manual clean with carb cleaner and brass brushes and picks at 99/100k miles. They were quiet dirty on mine.

DG330 Thanks for the pic. The car is in the shop for the week to get the timing chain done. I'll ask and see how much the walnut blasting is
