F30 transmission error after 3+ hours of driving

Hi guys,

I'm getting a transmission error after I've been driving the car a long time. I took this to BMW and they think the issue is my gear selector and fuel pump module.

I also occasionally get a drivetrain error. My stop start intermittently fails, and the car stalls.

When I restart the car, the errors go and return after a period of driving. Although the drivetrain error sometimes comes on 1-5mins after I start driving from a cold start.

Anybody know what these issues are and if BMW is right about the gear selector/pump module.

Cheers!

Your best bet is to get a second and third opinion from professional mechanics. If BMW thinks it's the module, start there and see if anyone else agrees. Someone here may send you down a rabbit hole!

Okay, I have bought a gear selector and fuel pump module that I will be replacing. Hopefully this error goes away.

I replaced the EKPM3 module and the GWS as per BMW's recommendations and the transmission error is still occurring. The code I get is cf17b1

Did you code and program the new module after you installed it?

No, I just installed it. How do I code it?

Just to note, the car drives, I just get the same error randomly. It goes away after I turn the car off and on, and it doesn't seem to affect the driving.

You need ISTA to code it. You cannot finish this repair without it.

transmission malfunction

I got the code and car wouldn't go into gear but would reset after a few hours of sitting. it was not the gear selector switch as they diagnosed by two techs and one said my transmissions was toast.. it was actually some wires in the engine area that came out of the housing, it was right up top so easy fix just hard to pinpoint

Yes I agree. After all the things I've tried, I'm now convinced I just have a wire that is short circuiting randomly, causing this error. I will now have to find the circuit and fix it!

If you start peeling tape off your harness, replace it at the end with this stuff. The adhesive on regular electrical tape will get gooey and the tape itself will harden and flake eventually.

Tesa 51036 High Temperature Wire Harness Tape

Also I keep a roll of this stuff around for interior rattles and wire wrapping:
